Hands Gallery presents the birdhouses of David Bruce

Being a bird isn’t easy business. You’ve got to get up early, you’ve got to “get the worm,” and you’ve got to sing your heart out, sunrise to sunset. Thanks to Phoenix artist David Bruce and his bold birdhouse handiwork, our feathered friends can catch a break now and then.

Stop by Hands Gallery during Art After Dark this Friday, Aug. 7, and gaze upon a distinctive assortment of miniature homes made for hummingbirds and finches alike.

OK—these are probably more “decorative” than “everyday use,” but I like to imagine the curious critters hanging out in Bruce’s “doorknob church” which features a tall steeple, or “the condo,” fixed with three separate “units.” The artist’s “Dr. Suess slant roof” birdhouse is just what you’d imagine: a wobbly, whimsical structure that begs to be hung in the living room, not the yard.

Hands Gallery is located at 777 Higuera St. in downtown SLO. The show is free to the public. For more information, visit handsgallery.com
