For the Aug. 27 issue, Pearl Munak of Paso Robles, wrote a letter to the editor titled “Support an independent water district in Paso.” She wrote this letter after contacting me for financial and political information about PR-WIN. I provided her with the information she requested, which clearly shows that PR-WIN has a very small budget provided by a few small landowners. We have no money coming in from any large wineries, and we are definitely not providing money to any political candidates running for supervisor. The only thing that her letter had right is that we do vehemently oppose the proposed AB 2453 water district that would assume control of our constitutional water rights if formed.
Her support for the Citizens Advocating for Local Management, or CALM, seems to be a bit misguided as they are the ones performing most of the activities that she blamed on PR-WIN. Anyone that would like to verify the true facts can download the PR-WIN financial disclosure statement from the County Clerk’s Office. While you’re at it, get a copy of CALM’s financial disclosure statement that the California Fair Political Practices Act requires of all Political Action Committees twice per year.
I will save you some time—they don’t have one. Perhaps Pearl Munak should ask where CALM is getting all the money to hire a PR firm, fund a Survey Monkey push poll, or pay for an exotic website. Then, perhaps she should take a look at who is on its steering committee and what their connections are to water marketing and sales in other locales.
Additionally, Ms. Munak is sorely mistaken about the voting strength of the proposed nine member water district board if she thinks that there are five seats “reserved” for rural residents. Actually, the fact is just the opposite, as six of the nine seats will go to the owners of vineyards and wineries. We are certainly used to CALM members fabricating the truth, however, in this case the misrepresentations are far too egregious to let stand.
