During the weekend preceding the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, three teams in Atascadero collaborated with Central Coast United for Change (CCUC) and the Food Bank in a food drive to replenish the shelves of county food pantries, which were depleted by the holiday season. Special thanks go to the Community Church of Atascadero who offered their hall as a collection site along with donations from the congregation to Atascadero Loaves and Fishes. Midori Feldman was a CCUC captain who organized an area of house-to-house food pickup with our team, comprised of Atascadero Democratic Club, Save Atascadero, and SLO Medical Alliance members. Food 4 Less in Atascadero made our team’s efforts a success by generously allowing us to use their front door to receive food and cash donations.
We were tremendously successful, collecting 997 pounds of food and close to $200 in cash. In all, our collection at Food 4 Less will provide 2250 meals. Atascadero residents who volunteered in the food drive and/or donated food so our neighbors will not go hungry certainly deserve special commendation. We made the best of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Day of Service to our community.
