Cougars & Mustangs: Finals

... And in the final stage of this star’s life, we observe how it begins producing iron at its core ... *yawn* ... Ingredients include sugar, cocoa powder, whole milk powder, chocolate liquor ... Huh? What? Oh, sorry. Must have dozed off in the middle of studying for a class.

Of course, you’ve all been there before, haven’t you? Of course an important difference is that Cal Poly students are now OUT of finals. How did that fall quarter end up treating you, Mustangs? Congratulations to everyone from the veterans to the freshmen for plowing through those classes. Whether you spend it here or not, have a wonderful break. One way you may wish to celebrate is with a cold one or two, and if that’s the case, Mother’s Tavern, which usually opens at 11 a.m. on a given day, will be opening at 6 a.m. instead on Saturday, Dec. 14 to aid in the festivities. With a DJ, burgers, and various drink services available, MoTav hopes to make your weekend a good one! But remember, if drinking, to do so responsibly, and that there are plenty of other ways to celebrate, too.

Cuesta students, on the other hand, are just going into their Finals week. Once that’s out of the way, it’s just a few days to go before Christmas, a realization that, rather than being happy, is probably distracting and perhaps even stressful. “What of the friends and family I haven’t found presents for yet?” one might fret. “Am I really too busy/broke/stumped on ideas for this?”

In my Film and Literature class the other day, we were discussing various literary theories and philosophies. One idea which has popped up quite a bit in the text we have studied is the idea that things do not have intrinsic meaning, meaning is assigned by the perspectives of individuals. Right now, if you’ve got your Calculus in front of you, and all you can concentrate on is a worry that you aren’t going to be able to express your appreciation for a person well enough by showering them with expensive goods, I’d like you to momentarily consider this. If you can’t obtain the “perfect thing” for a loved one, and you fear this will destroy your relationship with that person, what does this mean about that relationship in the first place? Alternatively, even the tiniest trinket can mean the world to someone if you help them to understand why. Sometimes memories and new emotions are the greatest of treasures. Now, please, try to finish up your work before it gets too late.
