Happy 2016, dearest readers! The column spends most of its time going on about two main campuses. Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo. However, each college has its offshoots that are no less important.

For example, Cuesta College’s North County campus does very good work. But today, I’m pleased to help spread the news that Cuesta’s SOUTH County Center is geared up for scholarly battle, ready to take on the shambling hordes of would-be pupils! Many new courses are being offered, from traditional for-transfer/degree courses to courses aimed at students still in high school who wish to engage in the acquisition of high school and/or college credit, to even non-credit GED preparation courses for those without a diploma. But here’s the most exciting bit. For the first time in SEVEN YEARS, the South County Center is offering free Emeritus College non-credit courses for adults. Covering a wide berth of subjects, from film appreciation to creative writing to creative cooking and even will and trust writing, the aim of these courses is to overall improve the lives of their participants through teaching healthy methods of self-sufficiency, cultural development, and even vocational education. All of these courses begin Jan. 19! 

The Center will be open for the two weeks prior, Jan. 4 through 14, Monday through Thursday, 4 to 9 p.m., and throughout this spring semester to assist those interested in applying and registering. The staff is even bilingual to aid as many as possible in the quest for education. The Cuesta College South County Center is located in the 900 Wing of Arroyo Grande High School on Orchard Avenue and can be reached at 474-3913.
