Cougars & Mustangs

Is it me, or is it always some sort of season related to being sick? There's cold season, flu season, allergy season, rabbit duck season—why, that's four seasons already! Few people remember the moment in Fantasia, during the Nutcracker Suite, where one of the sugar-plum fairies, after coaxing a beautiful flower to bloom for spring, tripped and fell headfirst into the solid inch of pollen now uncovered and had to be put on bed-rest for a week. I do, though. Classic animation.

This week's column, dear friends, relates to health. Make the most of it!

For starters, are you too much of a stick-in-the-mud to appreciate the beauty of flu season? Well, fine then. No pea-soup-green curtains for you. If you're truly set on combating influenza, and are a registered Cuesta student, you should know that free flu shots are being offered. On Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the SLO campus will have shots available, as will the North County campus on Thursday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon. Appointments are required, so please call 546-3171 or come by the Student Health Center in Building 3100, room 3150, for the former session; call 591-6200 X4207 or come by the Student Health Center in room N3025 for the latter.

Are you interested in Cuesta College's Licensed Vocational Nurse Program? If so, then on Oct. 16, you should visit Cuesta's North County Campus, 2800 Buena Vista Drive, Paso Robles, Room N2409; from 5 to 7 p.m. An information session is being held to answer questions and make clear the registration process, the pre-program requirements, and the program itself for possible applicants. From Oct. 15 to Nov. 15, applications for the year-long program (which ends in May 2014) will be accepted. Said applications can be found academic.cuesta.edu/nursing. For more information, call a counselor for the Pre-RN and Allied Health Programs at 546-3100, Ext. 2414 or 2137.

As for you, Poly students, you should know that exercise is a good way to stay healthy. Running, for example, can keep you in tip-top shape—but, as horses by affiliation, you should already be quite aware of that. On Wednesday, Oct. 24, Cal Poly's Safer (the school's sexual assault and relationship violence prevention program) will hold its annual Run to Remember 5K event. This $5 run (proceeds benefit the program) includes live music, speakers, spoken word performances, and more. It commemorates people whose lives were lost as a result of sexual assault. For more information, visit studentlife.calpoly.edu/safer/events/run.asp.
