If you have no Internet access, no library card for public Internet access, and no friends, co-workers, lovers, or probation officers with Internet access, then I’m sorry, this column won’t do a thing for you. Either find people in your life to fill one or more of the above roles to finally gain that access, or accept the fact there’s nothing I can do this week. Sorry. For those of you still here, which is hopefully everyone, today we’re going to talk about the entertainment industry (ellipses, pause for effect) … OF THE FUTURE!

At the following events, you’ll have opportunities to meet budding filmmakers and opportunities to blossom yourself if you’re a budding musician. Let’s talk of the former first.

On Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Palm Theater in San Luis Obispo, you can experience Syuxtun—Where the Trail Divides! Syuxtun is a suspense thriller written, directed, produced, edited, and starring participants of Cuesta College’s Workforce Investment Act Youth Employment Program, which was designed to help 16- to 21-year-olds discover great career options and assist in the education and work experience needed to get there. Gasp at the effort these youth put into their film! Cringe in horror as you choke on the piece of popcorn you really should have chewed before swallowing! Shriek in jealousy when you see a face you recognize on the silver screen! Just make sure to RSVP by e-mailing [email protected] first. While the event is free, seating is limited.

Now, for the music side of things. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Cuesta College’s North County campus in Paso, the second annual “Musicians as Entrepreneurs” seminar will be held. This is an event designed to help people wishing to make a career of music understand the business side of things. This includes legal and financial issues and how they affect production and performance; it also includes who to meet and how to market. The event, which is $20 for the general public, is free for Cuesta students, faculty, and staff with their Cuesta ID. Pre-registration is required, so please go online to musicbizz.eventbrite.com to do so, or call 546-3188 for more information. The event will take place in Dallons Hall, Building N3100, Room N3102.

Hmm, with all of this budding going on, it seems weird to think that autumn is upon us. But hey, there’s nothing wrong with having both pretty, metaphorical flowers and tasty, not-quite-as-metaphorical candy corn at the same time, right? Who’s complaining? ∆
