I got a piece of cardboard and a marker. Printed out a picture I got off the internet of Alaa Quddoum, a 5-year-old girl. On one side I wrote “What Are Our Democrat Leaders Doing?” On the other side I taped the picture of Alaa and wrote “Your Tax Dollars at Work, Alaa Quddoum Aged 5, Murdered 8/5/22 by Israel Defence Forces, By the Way our Senator Adam Schiff has received over $6 Million in Campaign Funds From AIPAC.”
It was nice to see such a large turnout at the “Hands-Off” protest in San Luis Obispo on April 5, but I felt it was necessary to remind people, even though Trump is in the midst of carrying out his plan of chaos, disruption, and retribution over here, Netanyahu is still carrying out genocide over there.
A few people took pictures of my sign. One elderly lady took a pic with tears in her eyes and thanked me. Afterward, as people were leaving I stood on the corner of Monterey and Osos for a while. There was a family waiting to cross Osos, and when the light changed the young man with them made a beeline to me and put out his hand to shake mine. He said, “Those are my people, thank you.” It was direct, intense and sincere. I said, “You’re welcome,” and was very moved. Later, a small elderly woman a bit hunched wearing a shawl came up to me and in a very quiet voice thanked me and said something about a protest, but I didn’t catch it all, and as quickly as she arrived she took off back down Osos. I couldn’t help but think she might have been fearful of drawing to much attention to herself in light of current abusive actions by our government agencies.
Another family came up to me with a teen, who looked to be about 13, holding a sign with a picture of the Palestinian flag on it. He said quietly, he couldn’t believe what people were doing to Gaza. I said, “These people are sick.” I could feel the hopeless and helpless of these people and the feeling that their plight is all but forgotten. And now there is the fear of even speaking up about it. I guess they were glad to see that someone cares. As he left, the teen and I locked eyes and gave a little nod. I knew exactly how he felt, I felt that exact thing when I was about his age and watched in horror and helplessness at the images on TV and newsprint of the atrocities committed against the people of Vietnam by one of the greatest military powers on earth. What made that period even more disconcerting was America had come out of WWII as the savior of democracy and freedom and the vanquishers of fascism. For a while there, everyone wanted to be American. But Vietnam and now Gaza, gave the world a glimpse of America’s underbelly and it’s not a pretty picture.

Nina Simone, 1964:
“The name of this tune is Mississippi Goddam
And I mean every word of it
Alabama’s gotten me so upset
Tennessee made me lose my rest
And everybody knows about Mississippi, goddamn
Alabama’s gotten me so upset
Tennessee made me lose my rest
And everybody knows about Mississippi, goddamn
Can’t you see it? Can’t you feel it?
It’s all in the air
I can’t stand the pressure much longer
Somebody say a prayer
Alabama’s gotten me so upset
Tennessee made me lose my rest
And everybody knows about Mississippi, goddamn
This is a show tune, but the show hasn’t been written for it, yet
Hound dogs on my trail
School children sitting in jail
Black cat cross my path
I think every day’s gonna be my last
Lord, have mercy on this land of mine
We all gonna get it in due time
I don’t belong here, I don’t belong there
I’ve even stopped believing in prayer
Don’t tell me, I’ll tell you
Me and my people just about due
I’ve been there, so, I know
They keep on saying, “Go slow”
But that’s just the trouble (do it slow)
Washing the windows (too slow)
Picking the cotton (too slow)
You’re just plain rotten (too slow)
You’re too damn lazy (too slow)
The thinking is crazy (too slow)
Where am I going? What am I doing?
I don’t know, I don’t know
Just try to do your very best
Stand up, be counted with all the rest
‘Cause everybody knows about Mississippi, goddamn
I bet you thought I was kidding, didn’t you?
Picket lines, school boycotts
They try to say it’s a communist plot
All I want is equality
For my sister, my brother, my people, and me
Yes, you lied to me all these years
You told me to wash and clean my ears
And talk real fine just like a lady
And you’d stop calling me Sister Sadie
Oh, but this whole country is full of lies
You’re all gonna die and die like flies
I don’t trust you anymore
You keep on saying, “Go slow”
Go slow
But that’s just the trouble (too slow)
Desegregation (too slow)
Mass participation (too slow)
Reunification (too slow)
Do things gradually (too slow)
But bring more tragedy (too slow)
Why don’t you see it? Why don’t you feel it?
I don’t know, I don’t know
You don’t have to live next to me
Just give me my equality
Everybody knows about Mississippi
Everybody knows about Alabama
Everybody knows about Mississippi, goddamn
That’s it!”
Since this writer likes pictures, he may wish to post pictures of the women, children and elderly that Hamas, the group that Gaza chose to lead them, slaughtered on Oct. 7, or of the hostages that Hamas took with them so that they could be tortured and killed at their leisure. Or, perhaps pictures of the Druze children killed by a Hezbollah missile.
Or, are his humane instincts a little too selective?
John:
Further, since this author also states that as a teen he saw images of the Vietnam war, you’d think that he would remember the kidnapping and murder of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in ’72, the decades of bus bombing, stabbings, and murders of Isrealis culminating in the Hamas pice de rsistance of flying hanggliders into Israel and murdering young people and gleefully kidnapping old women in wheelchairs. That is a declaration of war.
Did Hamas terrorists actually think Israel, in light of the decades of Palestinian terrorism, would simply convene a focus group? Now they’re scattered to the four winds, who’s laughing now?
I have no idea why anyone would have attended that “rally” populated by the aged and comfortably well-to-do. The rest of us were too busy working our crappy jobs to even entertain the idea of what “morality” is. I would direct your attention to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
What cracks me up about the moral outrage and hypocrisy of the aged, liberal, and well-to-do component of those who attended the circle jerk they call a “rally,” is the fact that having robbed the United States through deindustrialization and “free trade,” they now, with a level of material comfort and security most of will never attain no matter how hard we work or how much gratification we delay, stand their smugly waving their protest signs in defense of Palestinians. True concern for Palestinians would entail selling all of their U.S. defense stocks and investments in Israeli companies and becoming a tiny bit poorer. But no, it’s much easier to wave a sign for an hour or so, fold it up, hop in their Teslas, Volvos, or Land Rovers, drive to a 5 star restaurant and dine on steak, lobster, and fine wine all the whole breaking their arms patting themselves on their backs in total self-admiration at their own moral superiority and in disgust at us, working two jobs, making garbage wages, and unable to have enough breathing space to even find the time to attend a rally or contemplate geopolitics even if we wanted to. These people have placed themselves on crosses of their own making.
In religious terms, they see themselves as individual Jesuses, doing God’s work screaming at the rest of us who don’t really give a sh_t because we are too busy trying to put food on the table.
These same people at those rallys represent a slice of Americana relegated to their wealthy generation or to those with enough time or material security to allow them to contemplate geopolitics. It would also appear they haven’t, if they had, they’d side on the side of Israel, a nation defending its people and nation from hardened terrorists (and sympathizers) bent on its destruction and backed by a nation (Iran) who is on record as intending to wipe Israel from the map.
I’m a veteran, in my 50s, a history major, and proud member of the working poor. The next time one of these well-off rally attending hypocrites wants talk down at us, I’ll just continue to vote against their interests. As will the MILLIONS of Americans in the same boat. If you want a “kinder” America, as all your bumper stickers attest, improve our material conditions by shoring up our our social safety net and public institutions. Stop wasting our money on foreign entanglements and corporate bailouts. Otherwise, you libs can just shove it right up your…
Thank You Jose Nunez for your excellent letter. I also watched the Vietnam war as an early teen in the 60s. It was horrible and is what made me a protester for peace and justice.
The Israeli / Gaza War is sadly similar to the Hatfield-McCoy feud, they had been fighting so long they only fought out of hate, and forgot what the reason was that they were fighting.
Here are a few thoughts and comparisons of Netanyahu and Trump, along with Putin’s influence on both men.
I sent these comparisons, many times, to the previous Administration, and to Netanyahu himself.
PM Netanyahu is equivalent to Israel’s Trump. He will continue his war just to stay out of prison for his corruption, just like trump is doing with his run for the Presidency. PM Netanyahu and his right-wing fascist enablers are nothing less than Genocidal Maniacs, aka Israeli Nazis. That is sick and Grotesque!!! Just like Trump here in America.
We Americans should not send one more dollar of taxpayer money to fund Israel’s weapons of Genocide, or to fund Israel’s economy, as long as Israel and PM Netanyahu continue their Genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and in the West Bank!
Netanyahu has been the oppressor (for decades) and aggressor in most of what started this war with Palestinians. He and his fascist cabal knew about Hamas’ plan a year before October 7th and did nothing about it. The IMF Women brought the plan to Netanyahu, but the women were ignored.
Netanyahu and his team of fascist sat by sending no support for Israelis for 9 to 12 hours as the Gazans attacked Israel on October 7th, 2023. Netanyahu set this war up so he could keep power!
PM Netanyahu is equivalent to Israel’s Trump. He will continue his war just to stay out of prison for his corruption, just like trump did being elected a second time.
They keep killing Gazans in places Netanyahu has told them to go for safety!!! That is obscene.
We need to stop funding these Israeli Fascists, with Our American Tax Dollars, in their Genocide in Gaza
Scott:
Ok, how then, do you propose an arrangement that protects the state of Israel? This is a glaring omission in your diatribe. And you can forget seceding one inch of Israeli territory too.
You ask what arrangements would best to protect the state of Israel? It is difficult to talk with those with strong views on “who the chosen people” are. but here are a couple possibilities.
And, just for the record, my belief is that there are no chosen people…
1. Remove Netanyahu as PM and elect some one who is not out of his mind, and trying to not be prosecuted for corruption by continuing this war/genocide in Gaza.
Then Elect someone that really cares about the health and safety of all Israelis. Most of the Israeli People would agree that those would be good steps forward.
2. Let the state of Israel protect its self through diplomacy, negotiations and peaceful treaties with its neighbors, instead of threats of war(s)?
3. Stop holding grudges and stop fighting everyone that you think may have wronged you in the past. Forgiveness can end the endless cycles of hatred and wars. But for some the concept of “forgiveness” is not comprehendible.
That would probably be simple enough to get off to a good start.
As far as territory, Netanyahu and Trump want to steal the land in Gaza and develop it into Israeli neighborhoods. They are doing that now in the West Bank.
Gaza used to be the largest open air prison, now Netanyahu has flattened all of the infrustructure, and killed 100s of thousands of Palestinians in his ongoing genocide.
So any development is a long way out, and by then the climate crisis under current circumstances, will most likely make that whole area uninhabitable.
Scott:
1. “Most of the Israeli People would agree that those would be good steps forward.” The polling would suggest otherwise, sir.
In responding to this question, “In your opinion, do the Palestinian people have or not have the right to their own state?
In the total sample, a slight majority of respondents say that the Palestinian people do not have the right to their own state. However, the difference between Jews and Arabs on this issue is huge: While almost two-thirds of Jewish respondents believe that the Palestinians do not have the right to their own state, an overwhelming majority of Arabs hold the opposite view.”
So feel free to stand with Palestinians, I’ll stand with the Jewish people openly and proudly here in the US and in the Jewish state of Israel. In America you are free to have your opinion and that’s fine. I just won’t countenance it. (Further, my spouse is Muslim too.things aren’t always black and white are they?)

Well then, The Israeli / Gaza War is sadly similar to the Hatfield-McCoy feud, they have been fighting so long they only fought out of hate, and forgot what the reason was that they were fighting.
The Israelis and Arabs and all parties in the Middle East do not or will never understand forgiveness helps the forgiver more than the forgiven. So the hate will continue.
After seeing all the protests in Israel, I will still disagree with you fly.
When I was younger in the 90s after decades of never ending Peace Talks that never ended in peace, and just continued the Israeli/Palestine Wars, I thought let’s just send all the Middle East countries Nuks, then they could just destroy each other, until there was peace.
I have grown older, and I do not think Nuks are the answer to anything.
Show us that Netanyahu wants peace, then I might believe you. But Netanyahu, like Trump, is a liar, and a genocidal maniac.
We’re entitled to our own opinions, I’ll respond later after work.
John Donegan – your whataboutism is not in the least helpful. Yes, we all know about the atrocities committed by terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah. But their atrocities do not justify in the least the complete genocide and ethnic cleansing being committed by Netanyahu. And I know you’re smart enough to know that. And I’m sure you are also smart enough to know that Hamas’ absolute rule of Gaza is not what the Palestinians voted for back in 2006, when both President Bush and his Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, heavily pushed for an election because they believed that elections were a magic potion for curing political ills. This in spite of the fear that Hamas would run against the moderate Fatah party, which is exactly what happened. However, Hamas did not win by a landslide, not even close. They got 44% of votes compared to Fatah’s 41%, causing a unity government between the two parties to be formed. Hamas immediately broke that deal and started murdering Fatah members before taking total control of the Gaza Strip by force. So it’s pretty weak for you to attempt to blame the people of Gaza for their current situation of being exterminated by Netanyahu because “Gaza chose Hamas to lead them.” There is a much bigger picture there than just your little narrow view. Netanyahu has become worse than the terrorists he claims to be fighting against. And before you or anyone accuses me of being anti-Semitic, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. I am not anti-Semitic. I am anti-Netanyahu.
sLIvInsKE:
You argue that there is a moderate element to Palestinian society, i.e. Fatah. Is there? Moderates would search out extremists amongst themselves, clap irons on them, frog march them to Israeli authorities where they would promptly be turned over, charged, prosecuted, and punished. This has not happened. Why? Because every single Palestinian harbors sympathies for the actions for Hamas. Every single Palestinian wants to see Israel destroyed as do many of its neighbors. Every single Palestinian wants revenge.
Hamas declared war and war they shall have. Total war. Or, as we say in the U.S., GTFO. It’s over. The decades of murdering Israeli families in their sleep are over. The decades of bus bombing are over. The decades of kidnappings are over.
I’m old enough to have grown up on tv. I remember the regular images of burnings buses in Israel or shootouts on Israeli streets caused by disgruntled Palestinian youth or PLO “freedom fighters” and I’m still traumatized by it. It has come to its end and I’m glad for it. An armed society is a polite society and it brings me great joy to read that a random armed Israeli civilian immediately blows them away when they conduct an act of terrorism on an Israeli street and no one bats an eye. Here, the terrorist would be celebrated and the armed civilian would go to jail because idealists like you inhabit a place of privilege and don’t understand why your values only apply in theory. When someone is shooting at you, are you really going to start reading to them a chapter from Thomas Aquinous or return fire? I’d be doing the latter and live while the bleeding heart liberal would be lying flat on the ground unalive.
Your perspective is that of an American liberal, thousands of miles away, well fed, and disconnected. I’d love to hear your outlook living there, as a patriotic Israeli, arguing for a continuation of what has stopped working. Namely, dialogue. Palestinians have taken Israeli offers of dialogue as weakness, meanwhile people like you want more of the same. If Palestinians want respect, give respect, because the state of Israel isn’t going to just fold up and go away. And fortunately, we still have their back. Their defense is about the only tax dollar I’ve sent to Washington I’m happy to pay.
After Hamas and their sympathizers comes drug cartels and their U.S. distributors: street gangs. Our military is collecting signals intelligence across our southern border and have active duty troops there too. Are you going to cry foul about that also? How many people do you know who died from fentanyl? I know five people I grew up with who are dead from it. I won’t be shedding a single tear if the US Navy sent a tomahawk cruise missile right into one of their cartel headquarters in every single state of our neighbor across the border.
A certain eastern country with a population of 1.4 billion people is providing precursors to those drugs to the cartels, gaining ownership to a majority of warehouses at the Panama Canal, building new ports in Latin America and building infrastructure for those countries, it’s only a matter of time before they start eyeing our massive agricultural resources in the Midwest and California Central Valley as something they might want to feed their 1.4 billion people. What then, madam? Do you want your children or grandchildren to become their servants? What are you going to do when they come over the wire? It’ll be too late at that point. Defend our allies, defend ourselves. (Ukraine isn’t an ally, Israel is).
For all its faults and despite having served on active duty in a combat unit, graduating college, working two jobs, and still living in poverty, I love my country. Can the same be said about you?
As Teddy Roosevelt said, “speak softly and carry a big stick ”
How’s that for “mansplaining?”
Toodles.
So many words yet the war continues. Good luck.
