Mission statement:

New Times Media Group is guided by the philosophy of its founder, Steve Moss, who had one major rule when it comes to the work we publish: Make things easy for the reader. Therefore, we are accessible, accurate, logical, and coherent, because the easier we make things for readers, the more likely they are to read us. We provide the communities we cover with the context they need to understand the issues that impact them the most, and we are also their sounding board—a community forum where conflicting ideas get aired. New Times produces sharp, thoughtful reporting with journalists who strive to tell the stories that aren’t being told elsewhere, who work to give voice to the people in the community who aren’t being heard, and who breathe freshness into dry topics so that people will read and understand them.

Ethics policy:
The newsroom adheres to the journalistic principles that should guide every media outlet. We seek out the truth and report on it as thoroughly as possible, take responsibility for the accuracy of the work we do, and don’t rush to get stories out if they aren’t ready. New Times would rather be the last outlets to report on a story than publish something first that’s half-reported and contains false information. Our goal is to minimize the harm we cause by the stories we tell. We are cognizant of the power we hold as a media organization and the impact we have on our sources, residents, and the community as a whole. Journalists at New Times Media Group act independently; understand the difference between news and advertising; and avoid activities that might damage their integrity, credibility, or impartiality. As a publication, we hold ourselves accountable to our readers and the communities we cover. We respond quickly to inquiries about accuracy and fairness, run corrections when needed, engage in an open dialogue with the public, encourage feedback, and are transparent about our reporting and the work we publish.

DEI statement:
Fostering an inclusive newsroom culture and empowering reporters to take ownership over molding the voices of New Times is key to creating a space where everyone feels comfortable contributing to editorial conversations, pushing back against executive and team decisions, and collaboratively driving the direction of the paper. That culture extends beyond the newsroom into the community. At New Times Media Group, we have honest conversations with ourselves and the public about our implicit biases and how they’re reflected in our coverage, as well as what we can do to ensure we are more inclusive with the stories we tell—that they do reflect the diversity of our community with the depth and thought it deserves. It means confronting our industry’s history of marginalizing minority communities and the distrust that exists because of it. It means actively engaging with underserved communities in order to build trust and relationships. And it means hiring reporters from diverse backgrounds who can bring different perspectives to the newsroom and stories we tell.
