Mr. Ashbaugh, I don’t think you have read the book Hamilton (“None dare call it treason,” June 13). President Trump is not the only person in history to speak out against immigration.
Alexander Hamilton was upset about the election of Thomas Jefferson. He claimed the election was stolen and non-U.S. citizens in New York had voted for him. Hamilton, an immigrant himself, stated that “the influx of foreigners” would “change and corrupt the national sprit.”
I have not talked to anyone regardless of political affiliation who thinks what is going on at our southern border since President Biden took office is OK.
This border crisis didn’t just happen when President Biden was in office, President Biden created it with executive orders. The foundation of our immigration law is that all immigrants legal and illegal be self-sufficient and not receive public assistance. President Biden is providing public assistance in direct violation of our immigration laws.
We are not supposed to catch and release single males into our country, this was only for family units. President Biden is releasing millions of single males into our country in direct violation of this law.
President Biden is committing treason by violating the very laws he was sworn in to uphold.
Also a bipartisan border security bill that provides President Biden with more border processors is not the solution. This is why it was defeated.
It appears to me you are blaming President Trump for everything President Biden created. I would like to remind you President Trump is not in office.

Trump may not be in office, but he has his boot on the neck of the spineless GOP hard enough to keep them from solving any problem that he needs as a campaign issue (by their own admission.) The root causes of the border crisis, not addressed by the GOP or corporate Dems, are US-trained and supported thugs keeping pro-business, anti-union dictators in power. I would rather pay an extra dollar for a bunch of bananas and let them live with dignity in South America.
In 2016 Donald Trump inherited an immigration system that was in bad need of reform. The last time Congress had passed any reform was 1986 under Ronald Reagan. The system, however, was not broken.
In fact, during the eight years of the Obama Administration the number of undocumented immigrants being encountered at the southern border was at historic lows, having dropped from over 1.1 million in 2006 to only 337,000 in 2011. Obama was labeled the “deporter-in-chief.”
Rather than pursue Congressional reform, Trump simply demagogued the issue. He was offered a bill that would have provided comprehensive reform and money for his wall as long as DACA individuals would be allowed a path to citizenship. He turned it down. By 2019, the year before COVID hit, encounters at the border were back up over 800,000.
Fast forward to the Biden Administration and border encounters are out of control, but were already heading that way under Trump. There are three reasons for this. First, climate change has brought drought, wildfires and food and energy insecurity to Latin America. Second, with their country’s economy’s having been brutalized by the effects of COVID, many impoverished people have looked to come to America. Third, Republican politicians have exacerbated this issue by claiming that we have an open border. Unsophisticated people in Latin America take that as an invitation.
The Biden Administration, working with important Republican Senators who understood the issues on immigration came up with a solid immigration reform package which would add more border patrol agents and asylum. Once again, Trump demagogued the issue, telling his minions in Congress to refuse what would have gone far to solve our border issues.
The immigration deal allowed 5000 illegals per day, or 1,825,000 per year, to enter before they could seal the border. That is a lousy deal. Biden doesn’t need any Congressional authority to secure the border. If he did, how could he have made the recent Executive Order to limit illegals to 1500 per day, which he did due to political pressures? The president has the power to secure the border any time they want.
The 5,000 a day number is not entries into the U.S. but only encounters at the border, at which point the border would be closed. Those people would have to face asylum judges, some would stay, many would go. You’ve been confusing Trump’s lies with facts. Please read the following article:
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigrati…
At this point, however, my arguments are moot. Donald Trump will once again become the Liar-in-Chief. He only told 30 blatant lies on Thursday with several whoppers about immigration. The fact of the matter is that encounters at the border had more than doubled in Trump’s third year in office, 2019. It only dropped in 2020 because of COVID. Unfortunately, Joe Biden mumbled, stumbled and had the thousand-yard stare, rather than forcefully rebut Trump’s garbage.
I pray for the fate of our country.
So, Donegan gets 9 up votes for lying, and I get only 6 for stating the facts. What a bizarre country we now live in.
No, you get less votes for dishonestly parsing the term “encounters” as used in the proposed agreement, to make it sound like it isn’t an illegal entry. A “encounter” is anytime an immigration officer runs into an illegal at the border. And under Biden’s asylum parole system, they are then allowed into the country to stay for the years it takes to process their asylum application (of which 99% are denied). How many actually leave after their application is denied? So, in actuality, an “encounter” is an illegal coming into the country, no matter what you choose to call it. How many illegal walk up to the border just to wave at the immigration officers and say “hola”, and then go away?
