I agree with the statement, “Immigrants aren’t the problem,” in the May 17 letter to the editor. However, illegal immigrants, aka illegal aliens, are becoming a problem.

The thousands of our ancestors who came through Ellis Island didn’t come through because the U.S. had an open border policy. There were rules and laws to follow. There was a waiting list. You had to have a sponsor who could vouch for you, and you had to have a job lined up before getting here. After arriving, you needed to learn English and work toward becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen.

There are many good, hard-working immigrants in our country, but there are also many who have come in via the open border policy, who bring in drugs and are involved in gangs, human trafficking, and other crimes. In the eight years of the Democrats’ policies, MS-13 gangs grew, we have an epidemic drug problem, and in many cases, a total disregard for our laws and immigration policies.

Just because we have a president who loves our country and is following the law to protect the citizens of the United States does not make him a dictator.

As Americans, we can’t enter other countries illegally, so why is it OK for others to enter our country illegally? They are not entitled.

Also, regarding the “Remember when fascism was funny?” letter (May 17), I don’t listen to Rush Limbaugh, but I do watch Fox News and I do support our president (“The man in the White House”). I find truth in both unlike other media. They also both defend the “egalitarian and democratic principles of this country.” But they will never defend liberalism as we know it today because it is a socialistic view not based on democratic principles at all.

  1. So, a couple of activists from Los Osos want to pave the way for yet more weekly vacation rentals in Cayucos. They are squandering your state tax dollars to accomplish their goals.
To invent that Bruce Gibson voted against the further expansion of the weekly rentals in Cayucos because he lives 8 blocks from a proposed new one, is laughable. That is like saying supervisors should not vote on anything that has to do with roads repairs, because they live near one.
They want to kick open the door and further compound the problem. The ordinance as it already stands, allows for a small commercial motel in every residential block of Cayucos. Its wrong, but they want even more.
I have lived two blocks from downtown Cayucos for the last 68 years and can tell you that these motels in every residential block of town has done more to destroy the character of Cayucos than anything I have ever witnessed. They do not understand how most full-time residents want to see the ordinance completely re-written with strictly enforced provisions. If your license is revoked, it gone forever with a freeze on new licenses. Problem unscrambled.

  2. Dear Helena, please expand your media consumption to include more than Fox News. I dont know a single Democrat that believes it is OK for immigrants to enter our country illegally. There is a process in place. The president is NOT following the law. Plus, he lies. Constantly. Wake up.

  3. Barbie, I’m sorry but maybe you should expand your media consumption somewhat as well. Seriously, where have you been living? Since Trump was elected the CA Democrats have been pushing laws that put illegal aliens ahead of citizens and protecting them from deportation. And yes, that’s AFTER they break the law. You don’t think the Democratic leaders of lie? I think it’s time for you to wake up, because apparently you are really not understanding what’s going on in California or national politics.

  4. Gary, thank you for your response. Immigration is a complex issue in any society. It is not one-sided and it cannot be fixed in a partisan manner. To be an informed citizen, all of us need to pay attention to all sides, not just those we agree with. That was my point and I should have elaborated in my first post. This is not just about immigration either, we cannot trust our politicians and MSM to tell the full story on any issue. To be woke requires diligent attention and time. Sadly, many of us dont have the time. I consume more media than is probably healthy for me in an effort to stay informed. I even watch Fox News, which is how I know it is an unreliable source.
