Templeton school board trustee Jennifer Grinager found herself under fire from residents and the Gala Pride & Diversity Center for her connection to Moms for Liberty, which allegedly orchestrated a June 20 school board special meeting as a means to end protections for transgender students.

“Far-right hate group ‘Moms for Liberty’ will attempt to end protections for LGBTQ-plus students of Templeton Unified School District tonight,” an Instagram post from Gala said. “We are calling on our community to oppose them.”

According to the agenda, the meeting was intended to be a study session on California laws regarding protections owed to students based on gender identity and whether or not that was included under California law.

However, according to Gala Content Curator Lola White-Sanborn, concerns about the meeting’s intent stemmed from a YouTube video posted on June 5 where Grinager spoke at a SLO Tea Party meeting.

In the video, Grinager—who is introduced as a Moms for Liberty member, resident, and Templeton school board member—talks about a special meeting that will take place later in the month about transgender students.

“The topic is transgender students using opposite-gender bathrooms and facilities,” she said in the video. “If you don’t live in Templeton, it is important for you to know this and consider coming. … You will learn things that will help you in your [own] school district.”

She continued by explaining that in the meeting she hoped to find resolutions that work for an issue she says is “pretty rampant” throughout North County.

“I know for certain of four girls using the boy’s locker room in seventh grade [in Templeton] and at least one student at the high school [in Templeton] that is transgender that is using the female bathroom there,” Grinager states in the video. “Paso Robles, Atascadero, it’s happening. If you think it is only happening in the big cities, I’m sorry to tell you that you are wrong.”

She added that “they will need as much help as we can get” in addressing the issue but also clarified that she intended for the special meeting to be held later in June, telling meeting attendees that there would be a 72-hour notice on the school district’s website.

“We are creating an unbearable, untenable, unsafe, and completely ludicrous situation,” she said.

Grinager told New Times that she did not have time to elaborate on the comments she made in the video and directed the paper to tune in to the June 20 meeting for more information.

At the school board meeting, Grinager called out Gala’s claims about her ulterior motive, saying that the Moms for Liberty had nothing to do with the meeting taking place.

“I want to say there seems to be an impression that Moms for Liberty directed this meeting, and they did not. They had nothing to do with it,” Grinager said. “No one ever wants to end protection, no one ever spoke to us about ending LGBTQ-plus protects. Moms for Liberty is not a hate group.”

She ended her comments on the matter at the meeting by inviting those who had made assumptions about her stance on the LGBTQ-plus community and Moms for Liberty to talk with her afterward—citing her experience working with individuals with HIV and AIDS, some of whom were transgender, and the sacrifices she made to be with them as they were dying in the hospital.

“To say this is a community I hate is hurtful to my heart,” Grinager said. “No one ever spoke to us about ending LGBTQ-plus protection … no one I have been involved with hates that group.” Δ

  1. Hello I am the Chapter Chair of Moms for Liberty San Luis Obispo County and I am a Lesbian. My partner and I have been together for twenty years, we have raised an amazing now 24 year old to become the man he was meant to become, and currently we are raising our amazing 7 year old to become the person he is meant to become. First thing, Moms for Liberty had nothing to do with the special meeting held by the Templeton school board. We did however ask our Templeton members and those who might have solutions that will meet the needs, protection, and privacy of ALL students to come and speak. Second thing the call to action by the Gala Pride and Diversity Center was nothing more than a call to spew hatefull comments towards Moms for Liberty and cause divide between the LGBTQ+ community and those who do not support that lifestyle because of their own beliefs. What people seem to be disconnected from, is that we can have respect for each other and co habitat in society while not excepting the life choices others make. Asking someone who due to religious beliefs see the lifestyle of the LGBTQ+ community to except it and embrace it would be asking them to sin. Third thing and my own experience with the LGBTQ+ community of today, I have been attacked verbally over and over again by this group of love and acceptance and it’s supporters because as a Lesbian I do not agree with the agenda that they are pushing on society to except and embrace them above all things no matter what others believe in. I believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, I hold conservative values. In our house we do not fly the rainbow flag, we fly the one flag that we feel stands for unity and that is the American flag. The beliefs that I hold and value, at one time was accepted as my individual choices to have within the LGB community, but that is no more the LGBTQ+ community and it’s supporters have ridiculed me calling me a bigot, homophone, transphobe, fake Lesbian, and I have even been told I am not raising my child in a properly gay home. We have lost what it means to be Americans and what it means to have rights under our Nations Constitution. Privilege is not a right it is what we are given so that we can live free to be who we are, and no one has the right to take someone else’s privilege and push theirs privilege on others. I will end with this, Moms for Liberty is not. Far right hate group as stated by the mainstream media and the Southern Poverty Law Center. We are mom’s, dad’s, aunt’s uncle’s and grandparents who believe that parents have the right to direct the education, medical, and upbringing of their children. We believe in limited government as we the people have been given under the Constitution of the United States of America. America is we the people not we the Government.

  2. As a gay conservative woman living on the central coast for over 20 years, I believe I have a unique perspective on all this gay stuff. I’d like to first address of a couple things within this article. I would like to see a follow up article or update to this current article confirming how the special meeting on June 20 in Templeton came to be. Second did the writer of this article view the entire meeting in full including the time given for all public comments, including when conservatives are speaking? For anyone who watched or attended the entire meeting, what you saw or heard is the exact opposite of acceptance and tolerance that the LGBT community claim to be. GALA’s call to action was indeed a call to hate.
I wonder why there is so much attention on bathrooms and locker rooms when an unacceptably large number of our children lack the skills to complete math problems or read and write at grade level? Should schools cater to one group of children over all other children? The bathroom and locker room needs of a small group are dominating what happens to the larger collection of groups with no regard for the other groups beliefs or how the change will impact them.
The LGBT community of today claim to be the community of tolerance, acceptance, joy and love but todays LGBT community seems to have no tolerance, acceptance or love for anyone who doesn’t fall in line with what they want and believe. It’s an all or nothing deal and that isn’t the way America works. What’s ironic is that we’re fighting each other when the ones we should be fighting are the ones manipulating, marginalizing and dividing all of us.

  3. Labels disable. Look at who uses ad hominem attacks and you will be looking at someone who hates. Identifying with a label is difinitively limiting, as we are multifaceted. Judging people based on labels is exponentially stunting, as it carries with it negative intention. Instead, discern character based on behavior, not superficial labels. When one fails to do this, they expose their lack of character. They are caught in a trap of their own making. It is a losing strategy.

Keep the Faith. Truth always wins over Lies. Love always triumphs over Hate.

  4. Transphobic people just try to use bathroom as a talking point to be transphobic and not because they actually care about it trans women are women trans men are men we dont have to understand it to respect it and have compassion we dont have to understand it in order to know they shouldnt experience violence, or human rights taken away … we are all human beings and we all deserve respect and love I think the bathroom discussion is pretty dumb and meaningless on the grand scheme of things public bathrooms are an abomination and they should be structurally changed to be more private and cleaner for individuals.. Not a single soul likes or wants to be in a school bathroom for a long period of time their sooo gross + this Karens for liberty are the worst they can even fathom that the youth are truly free and question the gender binary or have different sexual orientations( personal choices that no one should care about just the individual ) I guess they dont have anything better to do
