OBON FESTIVAL is a Japanese celebration of the culture’s foods, arts, traditions, and free dance lessons. Central to the Obon Festival is the Bon Odori, a traditional dance for the event, which involves participants wearing colorful kimonos, yutaka, or happi coats performing coordinated steps and arm movements to the calculated beat of the taiko drums. Dance classes begin on June 10 in Santa Maria. The festival is July 19 and starts at 12:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Center in Santa Maria, 313 W. HOT EL CAMINO CRUISE NIGHT IN ATASCADERO takes place on Aug. 21 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. It’s a closed, controlled cruise route on El Camino Real from Curbaril to Traffic Way. Thousands of spectators come out to watch this show. From old-fashioned favorites, to new and flashy hot rods, this event brings out the best cars from all over the county and surrounding areas. ST. ANTHONY’S CELEBRATION

BIG FLOAT takes place on Sept. 6 at 11:30 a.m. and features a tide of nearly six feet at 1pm. The goal is to put as many boats as possible in a formation in front of the Baywood Navy Headquarters (Good Tides Coffee Shop). The Navy will charter a plane to fly over and take pictures of the boats. If successful, the event will be entered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest gathering of hand powered and sail boats, placed in formation in the water. Info: [email protected].

GOLDEN STATE CLASSICS CAR SHOW IN PASO ROBLES
