The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors emerged from closed session on Oct. 28 to announce the pick for the new director of the county’s public works department.

Wade Horton, currently the deputy director of the city of San Luis Obispo’s utilities department, will become the department’s new head. The position was left vacant in May when then-director Paavo Ogren resigned from his post to take a job as Oceano Community Services District’s general manager.

“The Board is excited to have Wade accept this position,” Board Chair Bruce Gibson said in a statement from the county. “We are particularly happy to have someone with Wade’s energy and experience. He knows our area and knows our key issues. We are fortunate to have him.”

Horton graduated from Cal Poly with a degree in environmental engineering, and has worked in both the public and private sector. He will take the reins in December.
