A sewer glitch in the city of San Luis Obispo caused about 30,000 to 40,000 gallons of sewage to flow from the city’s treatment facility down SLO Creek to Avila Beach. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Aug 2, said Curtis Batson, director of Environmental Health.
Batson said that Environmental Health officials were coincidentally doing routing water samples at Avila Beach that morning. Officials, he said, we therefore able to gather data soon after the spill.
“Preliminarily the samples look pretty good, they don’t seem to be elevated at all,” he said.
Batson said that Avila Beach would be closed at least through Aug 10 and later pending final lab results.
