Who’s draining California’s water supply? Forget about urban households—the real culprits are cows and alfalfa crops. It takes hundreds, if not thousands, of gallons of water to produce a pound of beef or gallon of milk, while plant-based counterparts may use a quarter of that—or even less. But it doesn’t end there: Big animal agriculture is making the drought even worse by exporting California’s dwindling resources to other countries in the form of alfalfa, a water-intensive crop that is fed to foreign cows, not humans. So keep on showering. You’ll save countless more gallons of water—not to mention the lives of countless sentient beings—by going vegan.
