As proud residents of Cambria for more than two decades, we are pleased to support two outstanding candidates for the Cambria Community Services District board this year: David Pierson and Tom Gray.

Each has served our community with distinction, and each is prepared to continue to work with diverse community interest groups to find workable solutions to our local problems. These are intelligent, hard-working individuals who encourage civil discourse; they listen well and they treat all citizens with dignity. They are the kind of “good government” leaders we need during the challenging times in which we live.

Like many others in our town, we are particularly concerned about two significant challenges that Cambria faces: a) we need infrastructure to provide a sustainable water supply, and b) we need good fire protection/forest management programs. We are confident that David Pierson and Tom Gray will provide the leadership needed to bring the town together with sound solutions to these issues.

  1. Bob and Susan Detweiler, you describe well all four candidates for the Board of Directors in Cambria Community Services District. Thank you.

A distinguishing feature, however, is attention to the effects of the climate crisis on the environment and ecosystems of Cambria and surrounding area. KAREN DEAN and HARRY FARMER understand that these effects must be taken into account all the time in the decisions facing the Board. Since I moved to Cambria in 2002, climate change has too often been tucked behind the scenes politically here.

Dean and Farmer know we humans have to change our assumptions and actions in order to diminish the harm we are causing to the basic structures of life on Earth: ocean, air, land, creeks, forests, etc. Human interests are not superior to the communal interests of all life. We must consider environmental well-being in every single economic decision.

I am voting for Karen Dean and Harry Farmer.

  2. I would extend paragraph 2 to include HARRY FARMER and KAREN DEAN. As for being good listeners, just watch the recent candidate forum for proof: https://my.lwv.org/california/san-luis-obispo-county/news-events/candidates-forums-2020 (scroll down the page for the video of the forum).
I can always tell where HARRY FARMER is at our weekly Farmers Market because there will be a group of smiling townspeople around him sharing stories and concerns. Or I can honk and wave at him when he is out caring for the succulents in our many recycle/trash receptacles throughout town. If ever I have a question about a CCSD or NCAC topic, I can easily reach KAREN or HARRY for a listening ear and some helpful resources.
I do take issue with the comment that Tom Gray is a good listener after hearing him shush the attendees in his recent Q&A more than once. Furthermore, and far more EXclusive of Cambrians, he chose not to consider the MANY letters written in opposition to his favorite SWF project at the recent NCAC meeting. How is that Bringing Cambrians Together????!!!!!
Also, in my opinion we need improvements to existing infrastructure to handle our current water supply and waste water processing BEFORE it is further burdened with the sort of demands Toms (& C4H20s) pipe dream of running the EWS constantly as an SWF would subject it to.
So my vote is most assuredly for KAREN DEAN & HARRY FARMER who have realistic views of Cambrias needs and consistently communicate their respect for this town.

  3. Holly, Elizabeth and Cheryl have summed it up quite well. Farmer and Dean are easily the best candidates for CSD Directors. Please give them your support.

  4. Cambrians,
If you want to keep going down the same rabbit hole, costing us millions of more dollars for a project that has been built for 6 years, and which continues to have multiple issues, vote for Pierson and Gray. Many Cambrians will not be able to afford the ever-mounting rate increases that go to this ill-conceived and very bad project, that doesn’t even provide us water! It is a very expensive disaster!

If, on the other hand, you want to see your ratepayer dollars spent wisely, then vote for HARRY FARMER and KAREN DEAN. They are focused on being accountable, not building out a town that sits in a forest, has no reservoir to fight fires, and a single lane highway to get 6,000 thousand residents out from harm’s way. They care about our precious environment and saving it for all who live here; humans and many forms of wildlife, alike!

How can a town grow by 700 more parcels (or more), with no increase in pumping ability from the CCSD’s State Water Board license of 799 acre feet a year? What are these candidates thinking who support growth in the most dangerous of circumstances? VOTE– FARMER and DEAN for a better Cambria!
