Pacific Gas & Electric announced Feb. 22 it has appointed Edward Halpin as the company’s new senior vice president and chief nuclear officer.

In his role, Halpin will be responsible for the operation of Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant and the decommissioning of Humboldt Bay power plant. He will also be the utility’s go-to with the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

According to a PG&E news release, Halpin holds more than 30 years of experience in the nuclear industry with the U.S. Navy’s nuclear submarine service and with Texas-based STP Nuclear Operating Company.

He will take over for John Conway, who had previously also been leading all hydro, fossil, and renewable energy generation functions as the company’s senior vice president of energy supply, splitting his time between Diablo Canyon and the company’s headquarters in San Francisco.

Halpin, on the other hand, will be based full-time at Diablo Canyon, concentrating solely on leading the utility’s nuclear program. Halpin’s position will remain under the supervision of Conway when the appointee takes over in April.
