New publisher for Tribune 

Chip Visci, formerly of the San Jose Mercury News, will take over for Maureen Saltzer as publisher of the Tribune. The Tribune publisher appointment was part of several executive changes made by its parent company, Knight Ridder, the nation’s second-largest newspaper publisher.

According to Art Brisbane, Knight Ridder senior vice president, “This is a win-win-win for all involved.�

Visci will also take on oversight responsibility for the Monterey Herald as well.

Visci, 51, started at the Detroit Free Press in 1978. He has a B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University and an M.A. from Ohio State University.

“Chip Visci has a distinguished record in both editorial and business operations,� Brisbane said. “Chip is energetic, competitive, and widely admired; he will be a great asset to these two important California newspapers.�

Tribune Managing Editor Tad Weber would not comment on Saltzer’s departure.

Saltzer became the Tribune’s publisher on June 14 of this year. Saltzer followed Par Ridder, the Tribune’s publisher from 2001 to 2004. Harold Higgins worked as the Tribune’s publisher from 1998 to 2001. Higgins was preceded by Julia Aguilar, who presided over what was then called the Telegram-Tribune, from 1990 to 1998.
