Diamonds aren't forever

A cornerstone of San Luis Obispo's downtown community, Jorgensen Jewelers, will be closing its doors for the last time on Christmas Eve, after 46 years in the jewelry business. Nina Chapman, who's owned the business since 1979, plans to retire and visit family in Utah. She began considering this decision to close the store two years ago when her husband passed away.

Chapman's two sons, Jed and Lonnie, who have worked in the jewelry store since they were teenagers, were given the option to keep the family business running, but they chose not to.

Jesi Benadum has worked at Jorgensen Jewelers for two years, but now looks forward to taking a month-long vacation in Europe and then moving to Eureka, where she has family and a better chance of finding affordable housing.

"We're not even going to look back," Benadum said.

For the next five weeks, Jorgensen Jewelers is offering steep discounts of up to 70 percent off on every item in the store.
