Cougars & Mustangs

Good afternoon, Mustangs! Have any exciting plans for next weekend? If not, you may soon! Rotary International is a worldwide organization devoted to the cause of eradicating polio. Although this goal is nearing completion, great work remains to be done. Rotary District 5240 and the Cal Poly Women’s Basketball Team, also known as the Lady Mustangs, are teaming up to fundraise as well as spread awareness via an entire weekend of entertainment, ranging from Feb. 25 through 27.

The 25th is a Thursday, and in addition to being able to pick up the next issue of New Times, you’ll be able to stop downtown at SLO’s famous Farmers’ Market, where the Lady Mustangs will sponsor a special booth from 6 to 9 p.m. Cal Poly basketball publicity, activities, and players will all be available, and Rotarians will offer information on Polio Plus (their polio eradication program) and even feature an historic iron lung on display, helping to educate the public on the early attempts to aid victims of polio, who would be placed inside the iron chamber to aid in their ability to breathe. Those who attend the booth will also have the chance to win various prizes, including game tickets.

The following evening, Friday the 26th, features a special National Immunization Day Alumni reception in Oceano, to precede a showing of the Great American Melodrama and Vaudeville’s current Hitchcockian Thriller and Comedy, The 39 Steps, while raising funds to help finish the battle against polio. Rotarians would be advised to call Linda Osty (234-7796) as soon as possible to reserve tickets for this, as seating is very limited.

Finally, on Saturday, Feb. 27, everyone is invited to attend the 2 p.m. Lady Mustangs game, the ever popular matchup between the Cal Poly Mustangs and the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, with a wide variety of displays and activities available to help educate and raise funds to combat the polio epidemic. One such activity is a post-game free-throw by fans, with a bucket of prizes for the winner! General admission tickets are available in advance or at the door and cost $8 for adults, $6 for seniors/staff, and $4 for youth. Rotarians and their guests will be offered tickets for only $4. Cal Poly Rotaract Students and District High School Interact Students will be admitted for free. Online ticket purchases and further game information are available at gopoly.com. Game parking will be free in the large parking structure adjacent to the Mott Athletics Center and the Performing Arts Center.

Contributor Lola White-Sanborn wishes the Rotarians the best of luck with their venture and the Lady Mustangs the best of luck in beating the Gauchos. Send her your collegiate news via [email protected]!
