Cal Poly’s got rhythm, Cal Poly’s got music. I don’t know if Cal Poly has a man, although it probably does; have you seen Poly Canyon’s slamming curves?

Covering the rhythm and music, the Student Opera Theatre presents Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” April 11 to 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Spanos Theatre. Singers from Cal Poly’s own music department will star in the performance, along with internationally acclaimed performers, a 38-piece orchestra, and a 35-voice choir. Tickets cost $18 for the general public, $16 for seniors, and $9 for students. Who could resist an opera that boasts an evil queen, a serpent, a damsel in distress, and magic animals?

Just one week later, on April 19 at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center, three Cal Poly music ensembles will be performing a Cal Poly Open House Concert. The Cal Poly Symphony performs Bedrich Smetana’s “Vltava” from “Ma Vlast” and Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2. The Wind Ensemble will perform pieces from its recent “Strike Up the Band” Pops concert. And rounding out the trio of ensembles, the University Jazz Band has a set that includes “Soul Vaccination” by funk band Tower of Power, “I’m Gonna Live ’Til I Die” as recorded by jazz vocalist Sarah Vaughan, and “Cruisin’ for a Bluesin’” by Andy Weiner. Tickets cost $12 to $14, and $9 to $12 for seniors and students.

And lest you think the talented music crew at Cal Poly is lazy—just two concerts in two weeks? What, do they actually sleep at night instead of laboring over their artistic endeavors?—on April 21 the Cal Poly Music Department will be host to the Cal Poly All-State Festival, featuring more than 100 of the state’s finest high school musicians. It’s a great opportunity to check out the future of music, and tickets cost a mere $12 to $14 for the general public and $9 for students and seniors. The concert takes place at 2:30 p.m. in the Cohan Center.

Happy listening!
