On July 16, New Times published a cartoon by Russell Hodin depicting the Pentagon overlaid with a Star of David, encircled in chains, captioned “U.S. Department of Eretz Israel.” This is not satire. It is a centuries-old antisemitic trope alleging nefarious Jewish power
The false accusation that Jews secretly control governments has fueled antisemitic hatred for centuries and today is used by extremists and bad actors across the political spectrum. At a time of unprecedented antisemitic violence in the United States, according to our Annual ADL Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, publishing a cartoon using this trope promotes distrust of Jewish Americans and invites further discrimination.
Publishing this image normalizes hatred and amplifies conspiracy theories. This is not the first time New Times has amplified antisemitism. We hope it is the last.
We call on New Times to immediately retract this cartoon, issue a public apology to the Jewish community, vet future contributors for histories of bigotry, and reassess the editorial standards that allowed this cartoon to get published.

Having an interest in history, I have often wondered what flaw in the German character caused so many of them to so enthusiastically embrace antisemitism in the 1930’s and eagerly participate in the horrors of WWII and the Holocaust. So it is dismaying to me to see it catch on as the latest “big, new thing” on college campuses, sort of like a hateful TikTok challenge. I am hopeful that it is just a socially-driven herd phenomenon that the kids quickly lose interest in before they move on to their next, and hopefully less malign, craze. The Germans came to regret their participation as they surveyed the ruins of their country, and the horrors of the camps, and hopefully the college kids and the rest of the world will be spared the full experience.
Pete Hegseth, Steven Miller and Donald Trump are spreading memes that have the American flag and Israeli Flag blending together, insinuating that the American and Israeli militaries are one Army in their [un]holy crusade against whoever Netanyahu has in his sites, for his next genocide, as in Iran and Lebanon… And to just state the facts; Netanyahu is a genocidal maniac.
Russell Hodin’s Cartoon is an accurate depiction of the American – Israeli military relationship in 2026.
Netanyahu conned Trump into starting the Iran War, and wasting almost all of America’s military assets on Netanyahu’s and Trump’s War in Iran.
It is difficult to see Iran as a “victim” with the tens of thousands of deaths they have caused, both directly and indirectly through proxies, including their slaughterof over 20,000 of their own people who protested against the government.
I am not calling Iran a victim. They are a fanatical theocracy. But Trump wants his own fanatical theocracy, like Putin, Iran and Netanyahu have.
One of my points it that Netanyahu is a better conmen than Don the con Trump, and Trump was conned by Benji (I don’t use the ‘name’ B-B-).
Another point is Netanyahu after his mass genocide in Gaza, is a genocidal maniac, and war criminal, as are Trump and Hegseth now.
And the last point is that Russell Hodin’s Cartoon is not antisemitic, but an accurate depiction of the American – Israeli military relationship in 2026.
This sentence need an edit:
One of my points it that Netanyahu is a better conmen than Don the con Trump, and Trump was conned by Benji (I don’t use the ‘name’ B-B-), by calling Trump at 3:30 am and scaring him into attacking Iran, to get America to use as many of our missiles and weapons in the attack. Netanyahu had Trump use 2/3s of our highest value munitions! Trump was conned by Benji.
