After attending the recent Morro Bay 50th birthday dinner, I realized just what it is the Mayor Jaime Irons does not “get” about Morro Bay. It’s the spirit of independence and local responsibility. I’ve lived in this area since 1974 and am proud, grateful, and honored to have been associated with families that can boast of relatives arriving in this area by covered wagon.

This city was built by fishermen, farmers, ranchers, and businesspeople who believed in and protected their independence and the local control of “their” city. The problem with Irons, Noah Smukler, and Christine Johnson is that they neither understand nor believe in that independence and local control concept. They want decisions made by outside “government” agencies like the Coastal Commission, Sierra Club, and even the county Board of Supervisors. None of those agencies should do anything more than “suggest” solutions to Morro Bay issues only if and when they may be asked for such an opinion. The final decision must rest with the voters and Morro Bay City Council.

The latest majority does not possess the independent will of the Morro Bay founders.
