This past national political contest was not an election. It was a marketing machine where representatives and ideologies were bought and sold.

The most expensive midterm campaign in history, approximately $4 billion changed hands under the guise of free choice and democracy.

Thanks to the Supreme Court’s Citizens’ United and McCutcheon decisions, “dark money,” provided by a few of the nation’s wealthiest individuals, bought the votes.

When money is considered speech, the richest have by far the loudest voice and the greatest impact, and “democracy” becomes a charade.

We should be outraged that outside money significantly outspent local fundraising in crucial elections.

Until these court decisions are reversed, we will have an oligarchy, not a democracy. Money buys representatives, gerrymanders districts, and sways votes.

In the meantime, let’s wean ourselves of mainstream media and “hate” radio. That’s where much of the money goes.

Money is not speech! Let’s get money out of politics.
