San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s narcotic detectives arrested Alfredo Moreno, 58, on suspicion of cultivating marijuana and using a dangerous weapon while committing a felony on Sept. 6, according to the SLO Sheriff’s Department.

At around 7:30 a.m., Moreno allegedly began to tend his batch of 647 pot plants on Villa Creek Road in Cayucos, directly under the watchful eyes of detectives who were staking out the illegal crop valued at about $1 million.

The detectives introduced themselves to the prolific gardener who reportedly turned and attempted an escape. The detectives pursued on foot. According to the department, Moreno then tossed a 20-gauge sawed-off shotgun in the brush before his subsequent capture.

Moreno was booked into SLO County jail with bail set at $50,000.
