A complaint filed by the California Attorney General’s Office against local medical and cosmetic physician Dr. Laleh Shaban in 2019 accused her of gross negligence—claims she says came from a disgruntled former employee—however, the doctor has reached a settlement in the complaint.
After several years of disputing the allegations, Shaban signed a settlement agreement in July 2020. She will continue operating her practice, Revive MD Medical Group, and providing her patients with aesthetic services and wellness packages. Shaban is triple-board certified in internal medicine, geriatrics, and functional medicine. Through her practice, she has offered concierge services for primary care and cosmetic services. Her approach is promoting whole-body wellness through metabolic medicine.
Shaban has decided to discontinue the concierge medical portion of the practice to focus her energies solely on her cosmetic practice, which has been growing steadily over the last year despite the complaint controversy, according to Revive’s Practice Administrator Ali Wenzl.
According to complaint documents obtained by New Times, under the terms of the settlement agreement with the Medical Board of California, which took effect on Dec. 31, Shaban is under a five-year probation period during which she must complete a course in medical record-keeping, a professionalism program, a clinical competence assessment program, and acquire a practice monitor.
The practice monitor must be a licensed physician or surgeon whose license is valid, is in good standing, is preferably certified by the American Board of Medical Specialities, and has no prior business or personal relationship with Shaban. During the probation period, Shaban is prohibited from prescribing and performing human chorionic gonadotropin treatments (a hormone for maternal recognition of pregnancy) or platelet-rich plasma procedures (procedures that accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints) until she has successfully completed the clinical competence assessment program, the settlement document states.
Shaban has to provide a copy of the settlement agreement and accusation to every hospital where privileges of membership are extended to her, to any other facility where Shaban engages in medical practice, and to every insurance carrier that extends malpractice insurance coverage to her.
A press release from Shaban’s office states that agreeing to the settlement is not an admission of guilt.
“It was approved by the state Medical Board, which licenses and regulates physicians, surgeons, and other health-care professionals in California,” the statement read.
“I have always strived to provide the best possible medical care in a professional manner since I began practicing medicine in 1996 and I will continue to do so,” Shaban said in the statement.
The Attorney General’s Office’s complaint accused Shaban of gross negligence in regards to five patients who received treatment between 2016 and 2018. The complaint stated that Shaban failed to obtain informed consent from patients, failed to accurately and adequately document and maintain patient history, failed to discuss the risks of treatment, and allowed non-licensed “health coaches” to administer treatments.
Shaban previously told New Times in an emailed statement that she had never had any malpractice claims filed against her until the Attorney General’s Office filed its complaint with the Medical Board.
“Unfortunately one of my former employees vowed to damage my reputation and disrupt my business by making false reports to authorities and news outlets,” Shaban said at the time.
In the recent press release, the office reiterated that Shaban denies many of the charges against her and attributes them to high employee turnover that she has since resolved.
“The extensive investigation undertaken by the Medical Board has taken a toll, however, and a trial would exacerbate the expense and stress on my ability to practice,” Shaban said in the release. “It is time to put this behind me and to focus all my energy on caring for my patients.”

This is beyond disturbing. This entire suit was brought on by an unstable, vengeful individual who is a miserable person and wants others to feel as bad. This is the most unjust situation I have ever witnessed. Dr. Shaban is the absolute best physician I have ever had the privilege to know. She is committed, professional, sincere, brilliant and has an incredible work ethic. She gives her all to her patients. Going the extra mile.. always. If Dr. Shaban didn’t have the answer, she wouldn’t rest until she found the person who did. She would often call after work hours to make sure I had the support I needed. She would reassure, listen, calm and always have a kind, wise, comforting word. She would seek out the best specialist, treatment, whatever I needed. She treated the whole body, mind and spirit. What she has taught me about well being I will carry with me always. I drove 3 hrs ti be her patient and will continue to be a patient at Revive. She truly has a true gift for this profession and losing her as a doctor saddens me beyond words.

Dr. Laleh Shaban, by all accounts, is one of the finest medical doctors on the Central Coast, and it is shameful the the California Medical Board went after her because of the complaints of a disgruntled, unstable ex-employee. We must demand that our state government contain itself and leave these professionals alone. I urge everyone who objects to this attempt to hurt our valuable professionals to sign the recall petition to remove Governor Gavin Newsom from office, as it is his poor leadership leading to these types of government overreach.

Dr Shaban saved my life. I felt sick, tired, and quite unwell for sometime. After being under her care for months now, I have a new lease on life! She is by far the best medical doctor I have ever seen. She is superbly knowledgeable about both traditional and functional medicine. She is simply BRILLIANT. Her care is empathic and exquisite. Her book is a must read for anyone wanting to have a fabulous resource on healing.
I have read extensively about this lawsuit and discovered it was instigated and spearheaded by a emotionally unstable, disgruntled employee. It is tragic that the California Medical Board has given this person (who rounded up several others, who later recanted of their accusations) such undeserved power and, as a result, harassed Dr. Shaban over completely unfounded allegations. Just disgraceful. The California Medical Board is responsible for the loss of one of the Central Coasts finest medical doctors. Just makes me sick and, to be honest, quite angry. Shame on them!!
I respect the manner in which the practice has addressed these concerns. As a 10-yr. employee of Dr. Shaban I have only seen her put the health and safety of her patients above all else. She is a talented diagnostician who works tirelessly to help her patients achieve total wellness. I have never met anyone more committed to their calling in Medicine. I know she will continue to serve the SLO community as an innovative and caring provider.
Dr. Shaban and I have known each other since before she was Dr. Shaban. We met when we were young mothers and formed a friendship that has lasted all these years. In addition to her roll as mom, she was passionately pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor. She would stay up all night working on some homework project and still find time to be one of the kindest, most generous friends I’ve ever had.
Dr. Shaban has worked incredibly hard to achieve her goals and to serve her community proudly. She will always be a hero of mine and hopefully to little girls everywhere who have big dreams in their hearts.

I have been a medical patient of Doctor Shaban’s for the entire time she has been in the SLO area, approximately 25 years. She is the most compassionate and knowledgeable primary care doctor I have ever had. She has helped me through several health crises, including a long hospitalization where she visited me regularly to keep up with my issues. I am so sad for Dr. Shaban and all her medical patients, myself included, who now must end our long doctor/patient relationships.
I have known Dr Shaban for many years and without any hesitation I can say she is a brilliant doctor. I’ve witnessed her help my relatives, several with life-threatening health issues. My late wife and I have been with Dr Shaban for years. We have appreciated her medical knowledge, thoroughness and sincere caring attitude. I am sorry she discontinued her medical practice and certainly would have stayed with her if she hadn’t.
I’m now 79, and I chose Dr. Shaban because she is a geriatric doctor, and being a functional one, she managed both prescription medication and supplements for me while always trying to be aware of side effects. She is personalistic
and most thorough in testing and diagnoses, curing my ailments as a new patient and keeping me healthy for the six years that I had been under her care and friendship. I don’t like driving, but did
drive from SLO to Morro Bay while she was there. So sorry for what could have been a more humane and less life altering choices made by people whose hearts aren’t in the right place. Have a great comeback, Dr. Shaban!

I went to 10+ dr’s in about 10 years and none of them could figure out what was going on. I felt like Dr.Shaban went over and beyond what anyone in the past had done. Dr Shaban is one of the best Drs I’ve known. She saved my life. I was a 20 year breast cancer survivor. I had a new lump that my Oncologist said “let’s wait 6 months and see if it grows. I didn’t want to wait because my cancer was a aggressive form. I originally went to Dr Shaban for other medical help. When I told her about my new lump she immediately ordered a MRI. The lump had grown. She then ordered a MRI Biopsy. Along my Oncologist was still playing this off as nothing. After getting my biopsy results I had triple negative breast cancer. One that you shouldn’t wait and see what happens. She called my surgeon right away who got me into a new oncologist. I’m now cancer free again. Thanks to Dr Shaban who was so proactive in my health. She went above and beyond. Giving me her cell phone number. Telling me to call her anytime day or night. She is one of the best. This kind of slander is wrong and it hurts my heart. I will miss her medical practice. She’s done so much for me and my health. Thank you Dr Shaban for all you have done for me and so many.

Dr. Shaban is the most thorough physician i have ever had… from Stanford, UCSF, Santa Barbara San Diego, Fresno, and SLO. She has always been professional, compassionate, dedicated, honest, as well as generous with her time. I have been with her before and after she adapted to a concierge. Before and after she adapted to Functional Medicine. It’s valuable to have a physician in this area who understands both types of medicine and knows when best to use each one. Dr. Shaban has always gone above and beyond for her patients, was always on call for them and their needs, and even saved many of their lives with her Medical knowledge and care! Dr. Shaban is professional, compassionate, and by far the best Dr. in SLO county. I have been a patient of hers for over 15 years. When I joined the practice I could barely walk. Other Drs only prescribed more RX. Dr. Shaban went to work and did not stop until she found out what the problem was. If not for Dr. Shaban I would be in a wheel chair by now. Her ability to think outside the box and get the the root of an illness is her specialty. Time after time I recommended Dr. Shaban to people who could not get answers to their illnesses. A very special follow up call, at my home, during some of my toughest days were very comforting to me. Something you very rarely see.
Too whom ever thought it would be a good idea to put Dr. Shaban through this mess, has taken so much from so many. It is a crying shame. We have lost a very special “one of a kind physician” on the central coast.

I met Dr. Shaban in 2002 when my husband and I moved to the central coast. As our neighbor, Dr. shaban was warm and welcoming. She helped us learn our way around specially since we were new to the area. We soon became her medical patients and received exceptional medical care. She often stopped by our house to check up on us after hours. I later became her decorator and helped with her office decor. I met many of her patients who raved about her honesty, compassion, intelligence and knowledge. She helped many patients and employees get through tough times. It stunned me to hear few disgruntled employees who did not meet her high patient standards, and let go, gathered to destroy her impeccable reputation with such malicious spite a blatant disregard for professional integrity. I am grateful to have Dr. Shaban in my life and I know she will put this behind her and succeed in life.

My husband and I have been medical patients of Dr Shaban for close to 20 years. As we have aged, there have been a few very serious medical issues that have arisen. Each time, Dr Shaban went above and beyond to ensure first, a correct diagnosis and then the best possible care available whether it was her or a specialist. To say she has saved both our lives at various times would not be an understatement. There are many aspects, as others have commented, that make her an excellent physician, including the uncanny ability to remember personal details. After all these years as her patient, she remembers more about my health than I do. This has definitely helped in resolving medical issues over the years. We are concerned going forward that we will not find a medical doctor as knowledgeable and caring as Dr Shaban. We are saddened that she has had to go through this situation and can say first hand, as stressful as it’s probably been, she has always stayed professional, kind and focused.
Dr Shaban has been an incredible and compassionate doctor to myself and more importantly my parents over the years. She goes above and beyond to provide excellent and thorough care to all of us no matter what the issue is or what time of day it is. This summer my mom had a potentially life threatening health scare and emergency surgery and she communicated with the hospital and kept my dad And I updated late into the night, explaining and reassuring us as to what was going on in such a horrific and scary situation. We are all thankful for everything she’s done for us over the years!
I met Dr. Shaban 5 years ago her care and help is remarkable. It is a shame that another human can be so hateful to try to destroy one’s reputation. Myself and my family will not let the accusations sway our minds to ever think of her being below any standards of care and professionalism

I have been a patient of Dr. Shaban’s medical practice, as well as her Revive MD Medical Group aesthetics practice, for years. She is extremely professional and thorough. She looks at every angle and strives to leave no stone unturned. Not easily found in the current medical environment. She is hard working and dedicated. Dr. Shaban has a natural passion for medicine and for her patients.
I feel it is a tremendous loss to our community, that Dr. Shaban has had to discontinue her medical practice, due to complaints by a disgruntled employee. It’s disturbing that the California Medical Board based their investigations and decisions essentially based on complaints from a disgruntled employee, without soliciting input from the majority of her patients, which have been under her care, for many years.
I have fully trusted Dr. Shaban, with any and all of my medical needs and will continue to put my care in Dr. Shaban’s professional, empathetic, extremely competent and caring hands at Revive MD Medical Group aesthetics practice.

Doctor Shaban is the most competent, experienced, ethical, caring doctor we have ever met. She has been there for us even on days off for any emergency that has arisen.

I moved to SLO County in 1999 and was introduced to Dr. Laleh Shaban by my sister, also a patient. I am a now a “ seasoned citizen,” having been blessed to be under Dr. Shaban’s care, for over 20 years. She also kept my precious mother under her excellent and loving care for several of these years; mom has joined dad in Heaven now but our family continues to be so grateful knowing our Mother was protected by Dr. Shaban’s medical expertise and TLC.
Never, in my entire lifetime, have I or anyone in my family, known such a caring doctor. Her practice has evolved far beyond most traditional medical practitioners with such phenomenal success. She continuously strives for EXCELLENCE and PROFESSIONALISM in training and knowledge above and beyond the norm.
My health would not have been of such quality without Dr. Shaban. It’s unsettling without her now as my Primary.
Never have I seen or heard of anything questionable or been unhappy with any treatment by the doctor or her staff.
I believe her’s is a divine gift from God to have such conscientious concern for those under her care.
I and my family have been treated with LOVE as though we were her own family. I know many patients agree wholeheartedly.
Dr. Shaban is a central reason I have delayed moving from SLO County, in order to be closer to family.
Today, IMO, because of the world’s embrace of evil, sick people with nefarious reasons delight in hurting others. Hate has succeeded in removing something precious to me. But, that hate stops here!!!,,, I stand with GOODNESS and TRUTH knowing Dr. Shaban’s EXCELLENT work and reputation will always prevail.
