Great Shredder column in New Times (“Free-dumb,” April 23)! This week, I participated in a Zoom meeting with state Sen. Bill Monning (D-Carmel) and SLO County Public Health Director Dr. Penny Borenstein. It was a short session but you certainly covered the sense I had of SLO County asking Gov. Gavin Newsom to retreat from shelter-at-home much too soon. There will be an immediate influx of people coming to the county for respite from their homes elsewhere. I know that many people are suffering from lack of income, but putting people’s health in jeopardy is a much larger concern. As I venture out for groceries every couple of weeks, I still see people ignoring social distancing and refusing to wear a mask. These protections are for everyone and have made a huge difference in the incidence of COVID-19 infections in the county.
How ironic that “watching trends” is the excuse. Short-term gain for long-term loss! Gee, since the virus is invisible, we aren’t able to see a trend except afterward. Those who signed the letter to Newsom should be ashamed of themselves. They may think they’re being proactive, but it is a misplaced belief. I hope Newsom continues the strong stand he has taken and denies the request.

Of Course its too soon! For any type of congregating.! This worry is still very (fresh) as new towns and states reveal the virus has just gotten there. Stop trying to monitor day to day, whether its gone , or still coming..
San Luis County is Not invincible and we don’t need to be coaxing those devil- may -care. would be tourists back here so soon . I’d prefer , not at all.
If Folks working in the Grocery stores or anyone still dealing with the public want us to wear the masks , then we’ll WEAR the Masks and hope that’s All it takes. Sure life is lonely , boring, frustrating and Very uncertain. I’m trying to use my Own common sense ( although on the suspicious side) and not waiting on any “all clear” from any politicion.. frustrated parent or entitled business people…
In the mean time, there are plenty of people needing help..friends..houses..a shower..a bed.. auto repair..
A long term place to live in their Van or RV… and more.
.Maybe there could be more volunteers helping with other needs.. the way those feeding people are
There are many people who are not suffering financially at this time..I’m not hearing about any of their endevors to get involved and make positive changes..or keep us hopeful. How ‘ bout it ??
A special appreciation. though, to whomever is covering costs for our city and RTA Buses to keep rolling at no cost to the passenger…and thank you Drivers !
A nut of some sort, for sure.
