The SLO Women’s March on Jan. 21 went far beyond expectations. I am thankful and grateful to all who attended, and there were a multitude of you, no thanks to me. I was (still) in a sour mood about the election results. Granted, California carried Hillary Clinton decidedly, but I was disappointed to discover there were too many voters here and in other states not willing to vote for Clinton. I also felt frustrated that some held their noses even as they cast their vote for her. The country could have chosen the Democratic candidate and our first woman president to avoid much of the mess we are in now.
New Times’ March 2 cover story, “In the streets,” mentions activist organizations, cofounders, politicians, and suffragettes like Susan B. Anthony, but does not once mention Hillary Clinton—not even in passing. Hillary has a solid history of activism beginning in 1971 when she worked with Walter Mondale’s subcommittee on migrant workers’ rights. From there, you know the rest—children’s rights, women’s rights, attempted health care reform, and so on. There are so many other activities she was involved with that fall under the radar like chairing of the New World Foundation in the 1980s supporting New Left interest groups.
I know what you are thinking—coulda, woulda, shouda! Move on, right? What do we do now, right? That is why you were at the march!
OK, but I am still with her even if she can’t be with us.
