I congratulate you for publishing the five essays about public art written by Cal Poly students (“Take it outside, kids!” Jan. 2). They show original thought, polish, and are the result of what appears to be excellent teaching.
I don’t personally appreciate all of our public art in SLO, but am happy it is proliferating. There is probably something for everybody.
In my view, the painted utility boxes are a clever use of space and a welcome addition to the scene. I have to agree that the clock by the old courthouse has failed to become a true landmark. If we judge the art by whether people gravitate to it and talk about it, then any list of successful public art in SLO must include Bubble Gum Alley. Like the shoefiti, it happened without official support, but it continues to grow and attract attention. Yes, it is gross, but much of our culture is.
