Many thanks for Glen Starkey’s article about our tiny blue marble and Earth Day 2014 (“Our tiny blue marble … ,” April 24).

More than 45 years ago, in December 1968, three men went to work in a small steel capsule. They were catapulted beyond our earthly bonds and sailed through the quiet eternal night.

The trio circled a barren, pockmarked boulder. Emerging on the sunny side, there was their smooth, blue home shining in a flat black sky.

While they recorded the image, they read from the Book of Genesis, delivered a Christmas greeting, and fell silent. For a moment, the world joined them, and we all shared the awe of our collective humanity and our own precious, too brief place in space.
