The city of San Luis Obispo’s Public Art Program and the SLO County Arts Council’s lecture series Rooted in Art continues with a talk by artist, educator, and seasoned public speaker Elizabeth Johnson on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the SLO Public Library’s Community Room (6 to 7:30 p.m.; free).
“Johnson will present a slide survey of her 50-year art career,” organizers announced. “Johnson’s conceptual practice spans diverse materials and ideas, often reflecting on what it means to create within a semi-rural, conservative county. She will share insights into cultivating joy, intellectual curiosity, and community connections throughout an artistic life. Attendees will also be able to view her handmade booklets filled with images, text, photographs, and drawings.”
The lecture series happens on the third Wednesday of each month and celebrates creativity, culture, and community. Its name comes from its inspiration, local metal fabricator and public artist Allen Root, who passed away last September after a decade-long cancer battle. Each lecture begins with a brief community update from city Public Art staff and the Arts Council, followed by the speaker and an audience Q-and-A.
Upcoming speakers include cultural worker Linnea Valdivia on Oct. 21, and writer, musician, and SLO County Poet Laureate Caleb Nichols on Nov. 18. Learn more at slocountyarts.org/art-talks. ∆
