Local Congressman Kevin McCarthy was set to be elected as majority whip for the newly elected House of Representatives, making him the third most powerful Republican in the House leadership.
McCarthy, whose 22nd Congressional District covers much of northern San Luis Obispo County and parts of Kern County—including much of Bakersfield—ran unopposed for the leadership position. Other politicians such as Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich have used the majority whip’s position as a springboard for the speaker’s chair.
McCarthy ran unopposed in his district in the Nov. 2 election.
