One of Cambria’s busiest community gathering places may receive a long-awaited facelift.

On Dec. 11, the Cambria Community Services District (CCSD) planned to review a proposed budget adjustment that would accelerate a package of upgrades to the Cambria Veterans Memorial Hall, the Main Street venue that hosts everything from art shows and wine tastings to holiday ceremonies and local fundraisers.

The proposal would shift additional money into the district’s 2025-26 budget for improvements designed to refresh the hall and extend its life.

“The Veterans Hall serves as Cambria’s primary event space for visiting organizations, local arts and history events, and civic celebrations,” CCSD staff said in the proposed adjustment. “Enhancing its appearance, safety, and accessibility ensures its continued appeal as a key visitor-serving venue in the region.”

Renovations have been “long-needed,” CCSD General Manager Matthew McElhenie told New Times in an email.

“Planned improvements include new flooring, fresh interior paint, upgraded windows, and potential enhancements to the kitchen area,” he said. “These updates are intended to restore the building’s usability and preserve this important community gathering space.”

To cover immediate improvements, staff are requesting an additional $70,000 in district funding. Of that amount, $60,000 comes from a San Luis Obispo County Tourism Business Improvement District local fund area grant awarded specifically for the project. The money supplements $50,000 already earmarked for the Vets Hall improvements in the current budget.

Combined, the funds would allow the district to move forward with the renovation.

According to district documents and the grant application, the estimated total project cost is $120,000.

“The overall project scope focuses on immediate improvements that enhance usability and community benefit, including the kitchen remodel, interior painting, floor renovation, and deck replacement,” staff noted.

One of the most significant upgrades is a full restoration of the hall’s hardwood flooring, budgeted at $45,000. The project would refinish approximately 4,500 square feet throughout the main hall, foyer, and stage.

Other improvements outlined in district materials include interior repainting using “historically sensitive colors,” replacement of kitchen appliances and plumbing fixtures, and replacing the existing deck.

Staff said that formal bids have not yet been secured. Current cost estimates are based on prevailing-wage calculations and assessments of materials and labor.

“Longer-term capital improvements, such as building foundation and roof work, are identified within the district’s capital improvement program and will be incorporated into future budgets,” staff added.

The Veterans Hall serves as a hub for art exhibitions, cultural events, fundraisers, weddings, and annual Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies—uses that district staff said highlight the need to maintain the building as a full-service event facility. ∆
