You can peel back a layer of the Storie Grubb mystery in the artist’s new Studios on the Park show of black and white illustrations, In Your Dreams, hanging through June 29 in the Paso Robles nonprofit.
Grubb—who on his Facebook page sometimes interviews himself disguised as his female alter ego Nan Nan Pearl, or appears in YouTube ArtClub with Storie Grubb videos as ukulele-playing jingoistic über-American Blyte Chokum (Think Dwight Yoakum)—makes detailed, stream-of-consciousness drawings in a style reminiscent of R. Crumb.
Is Storie Grubb the artist/musician’s real name or another alias? No clue, but he says his work is, “Where reality meets fantasy. Where humor absorbs tragedy. Where art imitates life. Where my hand meets pen to paper.”
There’s a second artist’s reception on Saturday, June 7 (6 to 9 p.m.), featuring live music and wine available for purchase. You can view the exhibition Sunday through Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon to 9 p.m. Δ
