This is in response to “Don’t bless us in public” which was in the letters section on Nov. 21. Bill Denneen states, “Our country was founded on freedom from religion.” Actually, our country was founded on freedom of religion. The founders carried with them the Holy Bible. The first year was very difficult, and many didn’t survive. However, those who did survive paused and gave thanks. They celebrated by breaking bread and having a Thanksgiving meal.

Years later, when we became a nation, a motto was created. This national motto appears on all of our currency, both coins and bills. It is “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Also, our Pledge of Allegiance includes these words: “one nation under God.”

We are a God-fearing nation. As such, it is fitting and proper that we pause from time to time and give thanks. Bill Denneen, instead of being critical, could use this opportunity to honor his god, Mother Nature, by quietly giving thanks for the many splendors she has set forth for him to enjoy.
