Amtrak California this week added a second round-trip train to its Pacific Surfliner service running between San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles. With the additional train, which started running on Nov. 17, Amtrak now runs 11 daily trains between San Diego and Los Angeles and six between L.A. and Santa Barbara.

The new frequency leaves L.A. at 7:30 a.m. daily and arrives at San Luis Obispo at 12:45 p.m. The return trip leaves SLO at 1:20 p.m., arriving in L.A. at 7:10 p.m., where a transfer for San Diego may be made. The Pacific Surfliner makes roughly 35 stops between Paso Robles and San Diego.

One-way fare on the five- to six-hour journey from SLO to L.A. runs about $25, which, considering traffic and current gas prices, makes it a reasonable alternative to driving.
