Thank you for Quinn Brady’s opinion piece, “The Coming Mess” (May 13). Ms. Brady highlighted the actions on the part of our current SLO County Board of Supervisors to thwart a free and fair electoral process. Their decision to allow large campaign contributions, which will be largely funded by out-of-county lobbying groups, seemed largely pushed through under the cover of darkness. Their subsequent decision, against any reasonable argument, to limit voting options was a blatant move to quash votes. The upcoming “redistricting,” which will be conducted by their partisan staff, makes one despair that we will ever be able to have a truly representative board. Hopefully, in educating us abut this situation we will be more aware and more vocal about our positions on these issues.

We are fortunate that the New Times and The Tribune provide coverage of local political issues, so that despite the Board of Supervisors’ blatant attempts to push through these changes almost without notice, at least we are informed.

  1. The coming “redistricting” will reflect the overwhelmingly conservative values that are under represented in this area. Our board DOES represent our values. It should have MORE Republicans. This area of the central coast is an enclave of traditional American values. The liberal faction is brought in and indoctrinated at Cal poly, they vote, then go home to wherever they came from. Most people move to SLO county to get out of the urban areas with their liberal policies, then move here and try to bring their politics with them. Leave SF and LA where they are and enjoy the small town, rural life.

  2. Silence Dogood, I think you’d be much happier living in Texas or Florida or Alabama….you should move immediately. 😖

  3. No kayaker, think i’ll stay and vote so at least my one vote cancels yours. Why don’t you move to China, most communists love it. Or maybe you could move to seattle or portland. You guys sure are doing a fine, peaceful job there! Nah. I like it here. I won’t be going anywhere. Maybe you’d like to put out a $500 reward for info on me or to silence me like the left wing looneys do to others. But to silence me or get me to move, you’d have to have the sack to make me. You sissies couldn’t break wind with a sledgehammer. Klownhack puddler is racist.

  4. Why is it that the Democrats are so eager to make voting completely sloppy and vulnerable to fraud? For example, resisting voter ID because hypothetically there might be someone out there without an ID (something which is needed to fly, buy a gun, collect welfare, etc)? Sending ballots to addresses where the voter hasn’t lived for years? Same day registration, because stopping by a post office or library, and taking 1 minute to fill out a registration card, is so demanding? Allowing party activists to collect ballots, and likely “help” voters fill them out?

I guess that if you assume that if only voters who really care about voting, and who are willing to exert just a minute amount of effort to vote, are allowed to vote, then the Democrats will never win an election. When you base your platform on promises of “free stuff”, you are unlikely to attract committed voters.
