On May 20, I attended the funeral service for SLO Police Detective Luca Benedetti, who was tragically shot and killed while serving a search warrant on May 10. I am heartbroken over this loss, and along with our community, I grieve for Detective Benedetti’s wife and two young girls, who will now grow up without their dad. It’s heart-wrenching.
Since the funeral service, I keep thinking about how their tragic story could have been mine. My dad was an officer and detective with the SLO Police Department for more than 25 years, and growing up, I lived with the reality that one day my dad might not come home from work. Like Detective Benedetti, my dad put his life on the line every day, doing a tough job that is often misunderstood and under-appreciated.
The details of what happened on May 10and the weeks and months leading up to it are part of an ongoing investigation, but it’s been reported that the shooter, Eddie Giron, was experiencing severe mental illness, and that his friends and family had unsuccessfully been trying to help him for months. It’s unclear if Mr. Giron would ever have been receptive to mental health support, but it is clear that our community’s resources were not enough to prevent him from turning to violence.
This isn’t the first time a person suffering from mental illness attacked law enforcement in our county. Last June, four officers were shot at and wounded in Paso Robles by someone experiencing a severe mental health crisis. As in this case, the shooter’s family had also tried countless times to get him help, but were also unsuccessful. Less than a year later, we’re forced to reckon with the fact that once again our mental health resources have proven insufficient.
The fact that Mr. Giron was experiencing a mental health crisis in no way excuses his decision to ambush the police officers serving the search warrant. But the facts of this story require us to take a long, hard look in the mirror and recognize that we are failing to keep our community safe, including first responders like law enforcement, if we know our friends and neighbors need mental health support, yet we can’t provide it to them.
When tragedy strikes a community, it can serve as an opportunity to bring people together to grieve as a community and lend support to each other. It can be a chance to temporarily put aside our differences to work together to find solutions so that such tragedies do not befall our community again.Unfortunately, that isn’t happening like it should. Much of the conversation so far seems to be finger pointing.
Some in our community have used divisive rhetoric that seeks to inflame rather than heal, insinuating that Detective Benedetti’s killing should be linked to past protests of police.As the proud son of a police officer, I will always stand up for good law enforcement officers. But I also believe that creating a dichotomy between “pro-police” and “pro-social services” is a false choice driven by national political antagonism.We need to move beyond the divisive politics that pit us against one another at the expense of practical solutions.Most people recognize that developing support networks to coordinate support for those experiencing acute mental health deterioration combined with better training for first responders in mental health support and addiction-related challenges makes all of us safer, including police officers.Now is the time to both support law enforcement and expand mental health resources so we can reduce the number of senseless deaths in our community.
I know that we are far more united on issues of public safety than what we see on TV or read on Facebook. Last summer, the Arroyo Grande City Council updated its police use of force standards with the support of both our police department and our community. And we did it with unanimous, bipartisan support from our council.
A commitment to working together, in support of both law enforcement and those experiencing mental illness, is what we need right now, not dividing into camps and exploiting tragedy for political gain.
Let’s use this moment to reckon with the urgent need to build a safer, healthier community. One where tragedies like this never happen again. Δ

With all due respect, you are speaking like a typical politician, and your forked tongue is falling out of your mouth.
I would have preferred that you admit to the readers your past vocal support of BLM, and far-left liberals like you, Heidi Harmon, Caren Ray Rossum, Dawn Addis, Adam Hill, Aaron Gomez, etc. contributed to the anti-police attitude that many low information voters on the Central Coast adopted during last summers looting and rioting. You do realize that your reckless rhetoric helped to fuel a mentally-deranged man to kill one of the police officers you claim to care so much about?
To put things in perspective, in 2020, 295 police officers were killed in the line of duty, an increase of nearly 40% over 2019. The Communist-driven BLM protests have unleashed unprecedented attacks on our brave heroes in blue, and the partisan left is responsible for creating the underlying climate that has made law enforcement work so dangerous. Mr. Paulding, if you are sincere in wanting to see our local police officers kept safe, I implore you to denounce BLM rioting and looting, and, as a local leader, you should work to stop the dangerous rhetoric coming from your leftist friends.
Your letter denounces finger pointing and asks people to come together to find solutions, but I wonder why you didnt previously write a letter asking your BLM friends to stop attacking our brave police officers this past summer, when Tianna Arrata and her anarchist friends were attacking law enforcement? Why didnt you write a letter asking the SQE low-information voters to stop using skateboards to crash shards of glass onto a baby stuck in traffic during the BLM shutdown of Hwy 101? Why didnt you write a letter when the Antifa Anarchist were rioting and looting storefronts and businesses right here on the Central Coast?
Mr. Paulding: instead of using the death of SLO Police Officer Luca Benedetti to score political points, I would suggest that you reflect on your role as a leader in our community, and stop scapegoating those in our community who have the good sense to distance themselves from the BLM radicals. Your cynical attempt to have it both ways will inevitably result in you losing the respect of both liberals and conservatives, and you should not use this event as a political calculation as you plan your campaign for a seat on the SLO County Board of Supervisors.

And I’m glad “Steve” brought up the CalCoastNews fake news article about me and reiterated their talking points. It’s obvious they/the SLO County GOP are close to Karen Velie, who penned that article.
Like our friend “Steve” here, Karen Velie is a pathological liar and unwell. We know we have a serious problem when the one source “Steve” cited lost a libel lawsuit for $1.1 million. And despite all that, because she didn’t like that I criticized her troubling conduct, she took me to court, made up an elaborate story that she couldn’t prove was true, and committed perjury. And when she lost, she wrote a libelous article about me as retaliation for losing in court. Now she’s facing another legal challenge.
Despite losing credibility as a matter of court record, the SLO County GOP still flock to her like she’s their golden calf. So when someone says, “Look at this news article about you!” and link to CalCoastNews, I just shrug. Doesn’t mean anything. But it does show the depths of mental illness that some people have in our community, whether the people exhibiting it are babbling trolls, Karen Velie or Eddie Giron.

I have a party trick that triggers online trolls like nothing else. Let’s just say it’s nifty to have a friend who used to work as a criminal profiler.
“Steve Edwards” likes to talk about the “whacky [sic] Alt. Left” and accuse people they don’t know of all sorts of things, right? If you take a look at their posting history, writing style and diction, “Steve” reveals a lot about themselves than they realize.
For example, the fact they’ve never addressed that they’re posting under a fake account indicates they’re deathly afraid of being exposed. They don’t want the world to know who they are. So let’s address that.
And if you’re a student of psychology, you would know they check all the boxes for projection. Common accusations they bring up about other people is mental illness and drug use. Based on their constant misspellings, simple grammatical errors, the frequency of their argumentative contradictions and their inability to respond to others without repetition, “Steve” has a cognitive disability that’s likely attributed to prolonged substance abuse, head injury or possibly early onset dementia. They likely graduated high school but not college. Given the volume and frequency of their posts, they are likely retired, house-bound, alone, and lack any purpose in their life other than desperately bring attention to themselves.
Their repeated use of soundbites, slogans and catchphrases are desperate cries for attention and calls for like-minded conservatives to acknowledge them. The fact that they feel compelled to repeat these slogans and catchphrases ad nauseum after they’re criticized by someone else shows a deep-seeded fear of being swept into irrelevance. Their hyperfixation on getting the last word in an online discussion –underneath articles that are naturally made obsolete from the daily news cycle — reveals a crippling obsession to be seen and heard. People who display that sort of behavior are likely widows, widowers or someone who alienated themselves from family. We’ve seen an uptick of those cases as a result of Trump’s presidency and the rampant disinformation he’s used to radicalize his Republican base.
They also believe their posts and comments are published to achieve a higher purpose, which is to create the appearance that they’re part of conservative movements when they’re not — and they’re either physically or mentally incapable of being involved. They likely did not donate to Det. Benedetti’s GoFundMe. They probably never submitted public comment at local board meetings because they’re afraid they’ll be judged for their physical appearance or verbal tics. In fact, they’re probably a social outcast who is so polarizing in their political views that Republicans distance themselves from them. That would make sense when considering the projection theory since they also accuse members of the “whacky [sic] Alt. Left” of being social recluses and outliers.
And chances are “Steve” will attack me for profiling them. They were so threatened by my sharp critique that they Googled me and had to dig a few pages in the search results to find one article published by a controversial media source they trust. In other words, I was effective. The fact that they accuse me of being other pseudonyms shows I live rent-free in their head, not the other way around.
In conclusion, “Steve Edwards” is a mentally unstable invalid who can’t reveal the truth about themselves because they fear they’ll be judged for the same flaws they accuse others of having — and let’s face it, they’re probably right about that. After all, they’ve played the same sad song for the past 2-3 years now and made no effort to be transparent. Because of their behavior, they’re alone and can’t stand the fact they’re throwing away their twilight years on acting like someone else. Their life is a monumental failure and they know it.
I’ll pray for them.
I just think it’s important that some people in our community continue to voice opposition to hate mongering white supremacist propaganda. I’m a firm believer in the principles of free speech as elaborated by our Founding Fathers of American democracy.
I also think it will be quite interesting when we find out more details about the individuals or organization that is spreading divisive violence promoting propaganda under the name Steve Edwards. I think it will be a revelation that some people will be surprised by and others will not be surprised by at all. That’s one of the great local domestic terrorist mysteries and there’s even a significant monetary reward for information. That’s what’s cool about free-speech. Everyone is entitled to it. But, for the sake of society’s well-being, there are reasonable limits to it, as we all know it is illegal to falsely shout fire in a movie theater or use words to conspire with others to assault or kill others or in some cases simply intimidate with the intent to harm. Like I said, very interesting.
The bottom line is love thy neighbor and see God in everyone and everything. Treat others as you would want to be treated. The world is a wonderful place and people are fascinating. That so many of us are in a position to help others is one of the greatest blessings there is. What a shame if some of us ignore that golden opportunity. They dont know what they are missing. But their opportunity has not ended. Selfless service to others breeds humility, quiets the mind and allows us to hear that sweet voice of God in our hearts. Thank you Lord!
