BIG HAIR “Being a Southern queen, we’re all about massive, giant pieces. So, I’ll be up at 3 a.m. the day before a show, just sewing away, … then getting ready three hours later to hit the stage,” Nala Diamond said of prepping to perform in drag. Credit: COVER PHOTO COURTESY OF NALA DIAMOND

June means one thing for the LGBTQ-plus community across the Central Coast and beyond: It’s Pride Month! That translates to events in San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria that celebrate the season, including drag shows. For our annual Pride issue, Staff Writer Bulbul Rajagopal speaks with queer speed dating attendees, Staff Writer Chloë Hodge talks to a student about what it means to be out in the science, tech, engineering, and math world, and intern Katy Clark writes about a trio of Central Coast drag queens and why they do what they do.
