Your kid’s next updo doesn’t have to be basic, thanks to Paso Robles’ On The Park Salon & Suites.

Owner Bailey McKean and her team of hairdressers are gearing up to teach parents how to style their kids’ tresses—and they can sip on beer and wine during the lesson.

“We’ll probably focus on different simple hairstyles, like showing how to do certain braids like two French braids and putting them in buns, or doing a ponytail but with twists,” McKean said.

Dubbed Pints and Pigtails, the event will take place on June 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at California Coast Beer Company on 1346 Railroad St., Paso Robles.

Martha Clayton, the co-owner of California Coast Beer Company, mentioned the idea to McKean while she was getting her hair done two months ago. With the brewery’s spacious interiors and McKean’s hairstyling prowess in mind, the duo realized their plan could work.

“One of my friends … sent me a video of a Pints and Ponytails class that had gone viral out of England,” Clayton said. “She said, ‘I think this would be a really good idea for you to do at the brewery.’”

Paso Robles’ Pints and Pigtails is capped at 25 spots. Thirty dollars gets an adult access with all their kids (it’s OK to bring multiple); hair styling supplies like bobby pins, hair ties, fishtail combs, and cute clips; and a beer.

Clayton recommended the brewery’s new releases—the light Lake Life beer and Party Pants pale ale. Adult chaperones can also make use of wine night that Wednesday when a glass is $7. After class, they can let their hair down during karaoke at the brewery. Sign up for Pints and Pigtails at calcoastbeer.com/product-page/pints-pigtails-class.

“We expect to have a full house for the event. I think it’ll be really fun for families, and it’s a way for dads to connect with their daughters and maybe learn some new tricks,” Clayton said. “Moms are welcome to sign up as well, or grandma, grandpa, whoever wants to learn to do their child or grandchild’s hair.”

A hairstylist for 10 years, McKean wants Pints and Pigtails to show parents that getting creative with their kids’ hair isn’t a daunting task.

She’ll be joined by three other hairdressers who’ll demonstrate hairstyles for parents and talk them through the techniques. If kids are unable to attend the lesson, McKean’s team will provide their guardians with mannequin heads to practice on.

There are no age or hair length limits for kids. McKean added that even bobbed hair holds the potential for little braids and space buns.

She’s already thinking of organizing another Pints and Pigtails session in September when the new school year starts.

“We’ve always wanted to do something like this. We just didn’t know how to host it in the salon to attract people,” McKean said. “Cal Coast Brewery is a great family friendly space, … so it almost seemed perfect how aligned their space is for hosting a bigger event.”
