SLO City Council adopted new guidelines for outdoor lighting fixtures, meant to preserve the night sky from light pollution, while keeping public safety in mind.
The council approved the ordinance unanimously, requiring new light fixtures to be shielded or downward facing. The new lighting standards will be applied primarily to new development. Existing commercial buildings would only be required to change lighting fixtures if building improvements are made. Assistant City Planner James David said enforcement of the new guidelines would be addressed when a person applies for building permits. Existing homes will not be affected unless there are complaints made to the city.
