Topaz Solar Farm goes online

The Topaz Solar Farm on the Carrizo Plain harnessed its first wave of electricity and sent it into the grid in
mid-December. It’s one of two solar plants sitting at the far southeastern corner of San Luis Obispo County.

The plant hit a 300-megawatt milestone, making it the biggest utility-scale photovoltaic solar facility providing energy to an electrical grid in the world, for now, said Steve Krum, director of global corporate communications for First Solar, the company managing the project. Construction is still underway at the site, with completion expected in early 2015, when it will bring a full 550-megawatts online. Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-Santa Barbara) toured the site and the nearby California Valley Solar Ranch on Jan. 6 and touted them as proof of the potential for renewable energy in the United States.
