New director appointed for SLO County Public Works

Paavo Ogren, SLO County's lead staffer on the Los Osos sewer project, has been tapped to become the county's new director of Public Works.

Ogren, currently assistant director of the department, will succeed longtime director Noel King, who's retiring after four decades with the county. His appointment was unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors on Oct. 23.

The supervisors, who have listened to Ogren present a weekly update on the Los Osos sewer project for much of the year, were enthusiastic in their support for his appointment. Supervisor Bruce Gibson called it "the easiest decision" he's faced.

Ogren's annual salary will be $160,000, plus $82,000 worth of benefits including retirement, Social Security, and health insurance, according to a staff report. He will serve as an "at-will" employee, with a previously established severance package in the case of "termination for convenience," the report states.

He takes over the position on Jan. 12.
