Mee not feeling so good

Mee Health Systems announced on Dec. 5 that it will close the doors to the Paso Robles Mee Medical Pavilion, including the new Cancer Center that opened less than two months ago.

The facility has accepted patients since 2005, and recently expanded to include the 123-bed hospital and cancer center.

A spokesperson for the King City-based nonprofit hospital said that the closing was unexpected, but the company, like many hospitals, is experiencing financial trouble. In a press release, Mee President Walter Beck said that the medical community in the area has been less supportive than anticipated, which reflects a larger trend.

"California has experienced more than 70 closings of hospitals in the last 10 years alone," Beck wrote. "And we continue to operate with ever increasing challenges."

Mee Healthcare Systems' other facilities in King City, Greenfield, and Soledad will remain open.
