High school tennis courts are racket-ready 

After new pavement, fences, and lighting, the students at Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo high schools finally get the chance to practice their skills on those remodeled tennis courts.

The projects were completed with the funds from Measure D, a $177 million bond measure aimed to renovate schools within the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, focusing on Morro Bay and SLO high schools—two of the oldest buildings in the district.

Renovation of the courts cost roughly $1.7 million, said district Assistant Superintendent Ryan Pinkerton.

“The modernization of the courts helped to make them CIF compliant for playoff use, and the new look helps provide our students and community with a certain amount of pride in their facilities,” Pinkerton said.

Moving forward, Pinkerton said the district is still putting together overall plans to modernize the rest of both campuses. In the 2016-2017 school year, students were able to test two model classrooms—complete with LED lighting, new furniture, and updated instructional equipment—and provide positive feedback to the district.

“Now we feel confident as we move forward with the rest of the classroom renovations throughout the two campuses,” Pinkerton said, “so that we do not waste money on items that we didn’t need or want.”

On May 5, Morro Bay High will open its newly renovated auto shop and is expected to open its new pool in the fall.
