Phoebe Hearst Cooke, a former board director for the Hearst Corporation and granddaughter of the Central Coast media mogul William Randolph Hearst, died the evening of Nov. 18 at Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton after falling ill with pneumonia, according to Hearst Corp. She was 85.
Hearst Cooke was born in San Francisco in July 13, 1927, to George R. Hearst, Sr., and Blanche Wilbur. Hearst Cooke—along with twin brother George R. Hearst, Jr.—were the two eldest grandchildren of the patriarch Hearst, publisher of the San Francisco Examiner. Hearst Cooke was deeply involved in both Hearst Corp. and the charitable foundations established by her grandfather’s will.
She served on the board of directors until 1998.
She is preceded in death by her late husband, Amory “Jack” Cooke, also a Hearst Corp. board member. Cooke died in 2008, following 45 years of marriage.
According to a Hearst Corp. press release, immediate memorial services will be private, but plans for a public service are pending.
