Dominic Sheehy

Captain, Cal Poly Ultimate Frisbee team

New Times: How do you categorize the Ultimate Frisbee at Cal Poly? Is the organization a sports club?
Sheehy: We are a social team and a club.

New Times: Who are some of the main teams you play during the year? Any rivals?
Sheehy: Our rivals have been UC Irvine, UCLA, and UC Santa Barbara

New Times: How do Cal Poly students usually become associated with the club? Are there tryouts?
Sheehy: Block Party during WOW week is a big thing to introduce all of the new kids. Otherwise, people just check us out during practice. During the preseason in Fall quarter we have tryouts, and then come winter quarter we'll split into an A-team and a B-team.

New Times: What is the concept of boosting in Ultimate Frisbee?
Sheehy: The concept of boosting starts with throwing up a really long, floaty disc so that a teammate has to run down the field and try to catch it. To be boosted is to jump up and grab the frisbee over the opponent that you are trying to beat down field.

New Times: How long do games typically last? Are they fatiguing?
Sheehy: Games usually last about and hour and a half. The first team to 12 points wins but there are usually time-caps. In terms of fatigue, it is pretty similar to soccer. You have breaks between points but you are still sprinting the entire game so it can be tiring.
