Sunny Acres owner Dan DeVaul recently told New Times that his sober living facility "is fighting for its life." A recent injunctive order from the San Luis Obispo Superior Court could, in fact, put the contentious property on its deathbed and roughly two dozen people may once again be left with no shelter. Judge Charles S. Crandall issued a ruling on July 2 that essentially granted every SLO County request to vacate the tents, barns, cabins (county officials refer to such structures as sheds), and RVs in which Sunny Acres residents currently live. Crandall ordered, based on a county request for injunctive relieve, that all the structures be vacated by Aug. 23. According to DeVaul, about 16 to 24 Sunny Acres residents face eviction. Crandall's order did not include a county request that DeVaul pay each resident $1,500 to relocate. The order requires DeVaul to either convert the stucco and dairy barns to "ag-exempt" standards or demolish them by Oct. 1. Look for the full story in the July 8 issue of New Times.
