City hall project over budget

The Arroyo Grande City Council approved an additional $151,000 to pay for cost overruns on the new city hall.

A staff report claims that many of the excess costs stem from the design of an elevator.

These include, the report states, $33,000 for a new unit to power an elevator because the original electrical unit wouldn’t have had enough power to drive the elevator. Code requires the elevator mechanical room to be vented to the outside. An inspector found it wasn’t, and the redesign will cost $12,700. A bathroom was found to not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and will have to be reconfigured for $8,050.

More than $45,000 of the overrun is for improvements “not addressed in the original budget,” such as additional carpet, furniture, and outside improvements.

The original budget for the city hall improvements was $456,000.
